Ravi Shankar (Varanasi, 7 aprile 1920 – San Diego, 11 dicembre 2012) è stato un musicista e compositore indiano.

Biografia

Virtuoso del sitar, detto the Godfather of Sitar, divenne noto al mondo per aver partecipato ai festival di Monterey (1967), Woodstock (1969), e al Concerto per il Bangladesh del 1971.

Compositore, maestro e scrittore, fu membro onorario dell'American Academy of Arts and Letters. Ha ottenuto due Grammy.

Fu George Harrison, con cui collaborò negli anni settanta, a dargli il nomignolo di Godfather, durante un'intervista ("Ravi Shankar is the Godfather of World Music").

Shankar ebbe due figlie divenute famose: con la cantante Sue Jones ebbe Norah Jones, nata nel 1979 e mai riconosciuta, sebbene il test del DNA lo confermi; da un'altra relazione nacque Anoushka Shankar, di due anni più giovane di Norah Jones, cantante e musicista anche lei, che inoltre si occupa attivamente del Ravi Shankar Centre, in India.

Ebbe anche altri figli da precedenti relazioni, nati a partire dal 1942.
