William Shatner

William Shatner nel 2005

William Alan Shatner (Montréal, 22 marzo 1931) è un attore canadese. È noto soprattutto come protagonista delle serie televisive Star Trek (1966-1969) e T.J. Hooker (1982-1986). Successivamente ha ricevuto un premio Emmy e un Golden Globe come miglior attore non protagonista della serie Boston Legal (2004-2008).

Biografia

Nato e cresciuto a Montréal, nel Québec (in Canada), da Joseph Shatner, un meccanico canadese nato da una famiglia ebraica masoretica di origini austriache, polacche, ungheresi e ucraine (il cognome originario della famiglia paterna era Schattner, in seguito anglofonizzato in Shatner), e da Anne Garmaise, una casalinga franco-canadese. Shatner si trasferì a New York nel 1956 per iniziare la carriera di attore.

Ha lavorato in numerose produzioni televisive, ma la vera svolta nella sua carriera arrivò nel 1966 quando venne scelto dal produttore Gene Roddenberry per interpretare il ruolo del capitano James T. Kirk, nella serie televisiva di fantascienza Star Trek. Nonostante il serial fosse terminato nel 1969, tale fu il suo successo che nel corso degli anni furono prodotti un cartone animato nel 1973, diverse pellicole cinematografiche ed alcuni videogiochi. Sia nelle vesti di doppiatore che in quelle di attore, Shatner venne sempre riconfermato per interpretare il ruolo che gli regalò la notorietà. Nel 1989 egli stesso ha diretto il quinto film ispirato alla serie, Star Trek V: L'ultima frontiera. Nelle vesti di scrittore a partire dal 1995 ha pubblicato diverse serie di romanzi ambientate nell'universo di Star Trek, intitolate Odyssey, The Mirror Universe e Totality.

Dal 1982 al 1986 ha interpretato il sergente T.J. Hooker nell'omonimo telefilm poliziesco di successo.

Continua a lavorare essenzialmente per il piccolo schermo. È poi tornato al cinema ogni tanto in commedie come Palle in canna di Gene Quintano (1993), Ciak si uccide e Edizione straordinaria per un delitto entrambi della serie Colombo (1993), Miss Detective di Donald Petrie (2000) Palle al balzo - Dodgeball di Rawson Marshall Thurber (2004).

Nel 2005 ha conquistato il suo primo Golden Globe come miglior attore non protagonista nella serie tv Boston Legal, dove veste i panni dell'eccentrico avvocato Denny Crane.

Vita privata

La vita sentimentale di Shatner è stata piuttosto travagliata. Si è sposato quattro volte. Il primo matrimonio è stato con Gloria Rand dal 1956 al 1969, con la quale ha avuto tre figlie. Il secondo matrimonio, il più lungo (21 anni), con Marcy Lafferty dal 1973 al 1994. La coppia ha divorziato nel 1994. Il suo terzo matrimonio è stato quello con Nerine Kidd dal 1997 al 1999. Questo matrimonio si è concluso tragicamente con la morte della moglie per annegamento nella piscina di casa. L'attuale moglie è Elizabeth Martin, sposata nel 2001.
