The first Nowell (o anche: The first Noel = “Il primo Natale”) è una tradizionale carola natalizia inglese, originaria probabilmente della Cornovaglia (anche se le forme Nowell e Noel, confrontabili con fr. noël, hanno suggerito - forse erroneamente - anche una possibile origine francese[1]) e databile tra il XVI e il XVII secolo (ma forse anche più antica), che venne pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1823 con un arrangiamento e aggiunte nel testo ad opera di Davies Gilbert nella raccolta Some Ancient Christmas Carol], curata da William B. Sandys.
Storia
[modifica | modifica wikitesto]Nowell è un sinonimo inglese dell'età moderna precoce di "Christmas" dal francese Noël, "la stagione natalizia", in ultima analisi dal latino natalis [dies] "[giorno] di nascita". La parola veniva regolarmente usata nel peso dei canti natali nel Medioevo fino al periodo moderno; Sir Christèmas (Manoscritto Ritson),"Nowell sing now all and some" (Trinity Carol Roll) e "Nowel – out youre slepe arise and wake" (Selden Carol Book) sono esempi del XV secolo. Di conseguenza, la parola venne anche usata per indicare una canzone o un canto natalizio.
Testo
[modifica | modifica wikitesto]Il testo, che si compone di 9 strofe (delle quali tre vengono spesso tralasciate nelle versioni moderne), è di contenuto religioso: parla, infatti, della nascita di Gesù, dall'annuncio ai pastori all'arrivo dei Re Magi, ecc.
Il “primo Natale” (The first Nowell) a cui fa riferimento il titolo è evidentemente proprio il giorno della Natività.
Nel ritornello, la parola noël rima con Israel:

Piccole Donne (varie versioni): essendo un classico ambientato nel XIX secolo, la canzone appare spesso in vari adattamenti (come l'adattamento di Greta Gerwig del 2019 o quello del 1994) durante scene festive o in chiesa.
La pietra di famiglia (2005): in questa commedia drammatica natalizia con Sarah Jessica Parker e Diane Keaton, la canzone contribuisce a creare l'atmosfera per le festività in famiglia.
Nativity Story (2006): essendo un film sulla nascita di Gesù, la canzone è centrale nella colonna sonora, evidenziando i momenti biblici descritti nel testo della canzone.
