Il dominatore della serata è stato Il silenzio degli innocenti di Jonathan Demme, che ha vinto 5 statuette (su 7 nomination), portando a casa i premi principali: "miglior film", "miglior regia", "miglior attore protagonista", "miglior attrice protagonista", "migliore sceneggiatura non originale". Non era mai successo ad un horror-thriller.

Per il cinema italiano spicca il premio come "miglior film straniero" vinto da Mediterraneo di Gabriele Salvatores e quello per il "miglior montaggio" a Pietro Scalia per JFK - Un caso ancora aperto (condiviso con Joe Hutshing).
