Italo disco è un termine utilizzato per identificare un filone musicale nato ed evolutosi in Italia a partire dagli anni settanta ed estintosi all'inizio degli anni novanta, dando tuttavia vita a nuove forme musicali come la dream progressive e, successivamente, anche alla italo dance; che hanno continuato a vivere fino agl'inizi degli anni 2000 e tuttora in voga, anche se in misura minore.

Successivamente, venne anche utilizzato il termine Eurodisco sempre per riferirsi a questo filone, in quanto il genere influenzò all'estero la nascita di sottogeneri o stili musicali a esso simili (vedi ad esempio il caso dell'Eurobeat).

Storia del genere

Le origini

La italo disco nasce alla fine degli anni settanta in un contesto di esplosione italiana del fenomeno d'intrattenimento della discoteca, con conseguente massiccia importazione di disco music statunitense; il tutto unito all'influenza proveniente dai paesi del nord dov'era in pieno corso la rivoluzione elettronica della New Wave e New Romantic.

Il termine "Italo Disco" deriva da Bernhard Mikulski il produttore e discografico tedesco che usualmente definiva "Italo" le produzioni "disco music" provenienti dall'Italia come quelle degli Easy Going, dei fratelli La Bionda, D. D. Sound e Gepy & Gepy.

Questi artisti avevano iniziato ad incidere brani da discoteca, spesso con testi in inglese, nella seconda metà degli anni '70: ricordiamo i successi del 1977 dei fratelli La Bionda con la denominazione D. D. Sound Disco Bass e 1-2-3-4 Gimme Some More e, l'anno successivo con il loro vero cognome, One for you, one for me, mentre nello stesso anno i Gepy & Gepy lanciano Body to body.

Ma anche cantanti che, in passato, si erano dedicati ad altri generi come il rock progressivo in quel periodo cambiano genere: l'esempio più noto è Alan Sorrenti, che incide nel 1977 Figli delle stelle, o Silvana Aliotta dei Circus 2000, che nel 1977 dà vita a Le Streghe, ma anche Marcella Bella, che con Nessuno mai aveva inciso nel 1974 la prima canzone disco in italiano, nel 1976 propone una versione di Resta cu 'mme di Domenico Modugno in versione discoteca.

Il rifacimento di vecchie canzoni italiane in versione discoteca è un altro dei filoni in cui si espande il genere: ricordiamo Discoquando di Tony Renis (che non è altro che Quando quando quando) e Una lacrima sul viso, che Bobby Solo ripropone in versione disco (entrambi questi dischi vengono lanciati nel 1979).

Vi sono poi molti altri gruppi minori, tra cui sono da ricordare i Number One Ensemble, i Questions di Gene Guglielmi e i Barbados Climax di Alan Taylor (che hanno il più grande successo nel 1978, con California U.S.A.).

Tra le prime etichette che si specializzano nella discomusic sono da ricordare la Discotto, la Radio Records, la Panarecord e la F1 Team.

L'Italia, col suo spirito emulatorio che le aveva fatto già nascere in passato piccole correnti ispirate alla musica d'importazione, inizia così a produrre "in casa" una propria forma di disco music che avrà poi successo a livello internazionale: sarà infatti guardata con curiosità anche all'estero, dove artisti come Eddy Huntington per esempio, o Sven Vath, si ispireranno per le loro hit (come Electrica salsa, del 1987).

Altri veri e propri successi saranno portati da gruppi e cantanti fra i quali: Reeds con "The game" e "In your Eyes", Baltimora con Jukebox boy, Woody Boogie e Tarzan Boy.

Seguiranno Self Control di Raf, con Delirium Mind, Mirage, Plus Plus, Take Me Up e Money Runner degli Scotch (che erano molto vicini al genere italo disco dei Righeira), con Tom Hooker - con adding scenografico di Den Harrow - e le sue Mad Desire, Catch the fox,Future brain, To meet me, con Kano (appena uscito dal fenomeno disco music made in Italy) e i suoi lavori Ikeya Seki, Another Life, Queen of Witches, It's a war e China star, le The Flirts (dalle quali uscirà la solista Linda Jo Rizzo) La famosa "In Your Eyes" di REEDS in due versioni soft e dance e la famosa Passion-Surf's up-physical attraction-oriental boy-new toy, le Fun Fun con Colour my love-baila bolero-happy station-give me your love, R. Bais con Dial my number, Charly Danone con You Can Do it-Ed io ti troverò, i Fake con Donna Rouge-another brick, il "funkeggiante" Tom Hooker (che prestò la voce subito dopo l'uscita di To meet me al progetto Den Harrow) con Come Back Home-real men-love attack-help me-toccami-atlantis-Runaway.

Tra i primi Dj degni di particolare menzione per quest'epoca e per questo genere vi è Daniele Baldelli (spesso orientato però su suoni afro). Dopo aver mandato durante gli anni '70 alla Baia degli Angeli brani disco music made in Italy si lanciò negli 80 al Cosmic con brani più elettro/afro e poi italo disco componendo lui stesso dei brani con un certo groove come Cosmic Parsley.

Il successo

Il "fenomeno" della Italo Disco porta alla luce della ribalta una serie di artisti italiani che vedranno i loro nomi legarsi inesorabilmente al genere nel corso degli anni: gruppi come i Gaznevada o i Righeira, o artisti del calibro di Ken Laszlo. Uno dei dischi che ebbe maggiore visibilità internazionale fu "Dirty Talk" di Klein & M.B.O., all'interno del quale lavoravano il deejay americano Tony Carrasco, Davide Piatto e la cantante Rossana Casale, quest'ultimi li ritroveremo nel progetto "N.O.I.A.". Anche REEDS con "In your eyes" esplode in Francia, Spagna, Germania, Svezia, Norvegia, Belgio, Olanda, Giappone, Grecia, Tailandia, Sud America grazie alla versione soft della canzone.

Alla Italo Disco viene spesso anche collegato il nome di Giorgio Moroder (apprezzato autore di colonne sonore e di brani come "I Feel Love" cantato da Donna Summer), quello di Baltimora con il suo noto singolo: Tarzan Boy, che ebbe un grande riscontro anche negli Stati Uniti; o Sabrina Salerno.

Nello stesso ambiente muoveva i primi passi anche l'italiano Alexander Robotnick, oggi apprezzato dj/producer della scena techno, che apparteneva al filone dello Spacesynth, la Italo Disco ossessionata dal futuro (si ricordano: i Capricorn, i N.O.I.A., Faxe (E.Zanza), Casco, Riki Maltese, Mr Flagio, Diux, Laserdance, Koto, etc.), dall'elettronica e che sarà anticipatrice dell'House di Chicago e della Techno di Detroit. Ma c'era chi anche era contro corrente nel fenomeno stesso della italo disco, e amava invece che tuffarsi nel futuro si tuffava nel passato nella cultura celtica o della Bretagna, Valerie Dore che cantò diversi brani ambientati nelle corti di re Artù o nelle lotte di Sir Lancelot come King Arthur-Lancelot-Legend-The Night, mischiati ad argomenti romantici, dei veri e propri sonetti italo disco. A produzioni e artisti "impegnati", si affiancarono ugualmente "tormentoni" più "facili" e amati dalle grandi masse; come: Vamos a la playa dei sopracitati Righeira; U.S.S.R. di Eddy Huntington; o ancora, Gioca Jouer,Ska Shou Shou e Fotostop di Claudio Cecchetto.

Lo stile musicale

Dal 1983 la italo disco avrà modo di stabilizzarsi e uniformare il proprio genere, trasportando tutte le altre influenze sugli stessi binari. Vi è un ritmo binario, suonato ad una velocità normale, nel quale il "levare" (battuto con un "clap") è più accentato del "battere" (che è simile ad un "boom"), una struttura in 4/4, dove, in ogni quarto, c'è lo stesso basso suonato su una nota diversa, per poi ricominciare il "riff". Di solito vengono usati 4 o 5 giri che vengono ripetuti e rimangono identici per tutto il quarto, senza alcuna dipendenza dal "riff" dei bassi. La melodia va di pari passo con la voce, che molte volte è rimanipolata elettronicamente e "gioca" con il particolare e colarto "riff" di bassi, e che si muove proprio come uno strumento: i testi in inglese sono spesso ispirati allo stile americano e trattano i facili o complessi amori della vita quotidiana; oppure si ispirano alla vita di notte, alla tecnologia, con numerosi riferimenti al Giappone e agli USA. Molte volte, però, la italo disco gioca soprattutto sul non senso delle cose.

La rinascita negli anni 2000

Verso gli anni 2000 si è registrata una tendenza alla rivalutazione internazionale del genere Italo Disco. Un ritorno agli anni ottanta sia nella musica pop che in quella elettronica, ha portato i deejay a rispolverare i vecchi dischi Italo per i dj-set e non solo. Famoso il caso dell'italo-americano Scott Wozniak, che nel 2006 rilascia su Defected Talk dirty to me, su un campione di Dirty Talk. Il ritorno agli anni ottanta viene celebrato anche con un altro genere collegato all'italo disco: lo Space Disco, o Cosmic sound (di cui Daniele Baldelli si è fatto alfiere), riportato in auge da personaggi come Lindström o Prins Thomas. In questi ultimi anni (2005 al 2008) sono stati pubblicate diverse compilation come quella di Daniele Baldelli Cosmic the Original, le varie compilation di Dj Zone Italo Session, di Dj Serge Vintage Future, sempre di Baldelli Cosmic Disco?! Cosmic Rock!!!. In questo periodo diversi autori italiani e stranieri stanno producendo album sul genere, a volte anche campionando basi di Kano e Tom Hooker come: Useless Wooden Toys con Dancegum e Calvin Harris con I created disco.

Dal 2000 in poi, sono nate nuove etichette, che promuovono, producono nuovi lavori del genere Italo Disco, etichette come I Venti Records, e Flashback Records, con loro artisti storici come Tom Hooker, George Aaron, Miko Mission e molti altri sono tornati a incidere nuovo materiale. Incredibilmente anche nuovi volti odierni sono diventati conosciuti per nuovi lavori Italo Disco, personaggi come Peter Arcade, singer poliedrico, e Joey Mauro, tastierista e ricercatore di sound anni 80.

I sottogeneri derivati dalla italo disco

Il rapido sovraffollamento della scena, con conseguente saturazione musicale, unito ad una certa moda esterofila che premiò artisti stranieri, consegnò l'italo disco verso il suo declino, con conseguente svalutazione del livello musicale della corrente. Un declino, però, che divenne trasformazione: l'ambiente della musica dance italiano attraversò un forte ricambio di artisti che, nei primi anni novanta, vide come protagonisti i giovani: Gigi D'Agostino, Robert Miles, Giorgio Prezioso, Corona, Claudio Coccoluto, Corrado Rizza, Gino Woody Bianchi, Bolognesi&Provenzano, Ike Therry, Albertino e tanti altri, che decretarono l'inizio dell'era italo dance. Un'era del tutto diversa, che eliminò alcune caratteristiche della italo disco come le percussioni, certi suoni di synth e riverberi e le particolarità dei nomi. Ma la italo disco, tuttavia, non è morta; grazie alla musica elettronica, ai DJ come Baldelli, a cantanti come Tom Hooker rappresentato scenicamente in Italia dal ballerino Den Harrow e a molti altri ha continuato a vivere anche negli anni duemila.

Parallelamente artisti come Mario Fargetta, Tommy Vee, DB Boulevard, Gianni Coletti e cantanti come Sagi Rei e Claudio Suriano promuovono in Italia e nel mondo la loro idea della musica house.

Giochi linguistici proposti dalla italo disco

Ci si potrebbe domandare la ragion d'essere della scelta di nomi apparentemente bizzarri i quali si mostrano sorreggersi su delle assonanze fonetiche trasportate dall'inglese all'italiano. Il nome Den Harrow, per esempio, ricorda la parola Denaro, e in questo, per l'appunto, consisteva il progetto Den Harrow:sfruttare la buona vocalità di Tom Hooker e le doti estetiche di Stefano Zandri; oppure Joe Yellow che è riconducibile alla parola Gioiello, Valerie Dore all'auspicio di un celere successo da disco d'oro. Jock Hattle ricorda Giocattolo, Styloo invece sta per Stilo e Den Harrow in una puntata di Radio Harrow spiegò che gli Styloo si chiamavano così sempre per motivi economici e ricordò che il nome deriva dalla frase "dammi una Styloo che ti firmo l'assegno". Oppure Albert One (pronuciato approssimativamente: albert uan) è riconducibile a una mascherazione del nome proprio Albertone oppure Silver Pozzoli che sta per Silvio Pozzoli e molti altri.
Altre volte invece, soprattutto per quegli artisti più vicini alle radici italiane, alcuni usavano il proprio nome di battesimo come Jessica, Bianca, Sabrina, Vanessa, Andrea e Lisa (molto più frequenti fra le artiste più che fra gli artisti). I nomi spesso potevano giocare intorno a rimandi letterari, culturali e musicali, quasi come una citazione; per esempio: Casanova, Dr Zivago, Brando, De Niro, William King, Morgana, New Baccara, Bianca Neve. Basta osservare la particolarità dei nomi per individuare la creatività e la complessità degli artisti, dei produttori e del panorama della Italo disco.
