King of the Ring
(Reindirizzamento da WWE King of the Ring)
Il King of the Ring è un torneo di wrestling organizzato dalla WWE.
Il torneo si è tenuto con cadenza annuale tra il 1985 e il 2002, mentre dal 2002 ad oggi si sono svolte solo sei edizioni occasionali (2006, 2008, 2010, 2015, 2019, 2021).
Dal 2024 l'evento è tornato a cadenza annuale e come premio il vincitore ottiene un match titolato a SummerSlam.
Storia
[modifica | modifica wikitesto]La prima edizione del torneo si svolse nel 1985 e fu vinta da Don Muraco.
Personaggio del re
[modifica | modifica wikitesto]Il secondo vincitore del King of the Ring, Harley Race, iniziò ad indossare una corona da ré grazie alla conquista del torneo, ma poco tempo dopo si infortunò alla schiena e il suo manager Bobby Heenan affidò lo scettro ad Haku; quando Race tornò dall'infortunio ebbe una breve faida con Haku, senza però riuscire a riguadagnare la corona.
Nel 1989 Randy Savage vinse il King of the Ring e iniziò a definirsi "Macho King"; abbandonò la gimmick del ré in seguito al suo momentaneo ritiro nel 1991.
Owen Hart, Mabel, Booker T, William Regal, Sheamus, Wade Barrett e Baron Corbin sono altri lottatori che si sono fregiati del titolo di ré dopo aver vinto il King of the Ring.
