Memphis è una città degli Stati Uniti d'America, capoluogo della contea di Shelby dello stato del Tennessee.

Si estende su un'area di 763,4 km² con una popolazione di 677.272 abitanti (stima 2007), risultando così la prima città del Tennessee.

È conosciuta nel mondo come culla di molti generi musicali americani fra i quali blues, gospel e rock and roll. Fra gli artisti che sono cresciuti o che hanno iniziato qui la loro carriera ci sono: Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley qui sepolto, Aretha Franklin, Carl Perkins, John Lee Hooker, Justin Timberlake, Howlin' Wolf, Jerry Lee Lewis, Al Green, Muddy Waters, Tina Turner, Roy Orbison, Willie Mae Ford Smith, Sam Cooke, Booker T. and the MGs, Otis Redding, The Blackwood Brothers, Isaac Hayes, Rufus Thomas, W.C. Handy e Jerry "The King" Lawler.

Il 4 aprile 1968 vi fu assassinato Martin Luther King.

La popolazione è in prevalenza afroamericana (61%). I bianchi (34 %) sono di origine anglosassone, ispanica, italiana. I nativi sono meno dell'1%.
