Les Paul, al secolo Lester William Polfuss (Waukesha, 9 giugno 1915 – New York City, 12 agosto 2009), è stato un chitarrista e inventore statunitense. È stato il creatore della Gibson Les Paul.

Si avvicina alla musica all'età di otto anni, imparando a suonare l'armonica. Da questo strumento musicale egli passerà allo studio del banjo e, infine, nel 1928, si avvicina allo studio della chitarra.
Negli anni quaranta egli inventa la registrazione multitraccia (progetterà il primo banco di registrazione a 8 tracce) e la tecnica delle incisioni sovrapposte (o sovraincisione): incidendo uno sopra l'altro i suoni da lui creati (basso-armonia e contrappunto) giunge a risultati eccellenti, tanto da diventare celebre con il nome di Les Paul e le sue cento chitarre.
In questo periodo egli si avvale spesso della voce di Mary Ford, sua moglie, per creare con lei il celeberrimo duo che usufruiva di una Mary Ford a tre voci, oggi normale amministrazione, ma a quei tempi una vera e propria rivoluzione tecnica.
La sua Gibson Les Paul è oggi una delle più famose chitarre al mondo. Tra i chitarristi che utilizzano una Gibson i più famosi sono: Jimmy Page (chitarrista dei Led Zeppelin), Slash (chitarrista dei Velvet Revolver, ex Guns N' Roses), Joe Perry (chitarrista degli Aerosmith), Zakk Wylde (chitarrista e cantante dei Pride & Glory, poi Black Label Society, ed ex Ozzy Osbourne), Sergio Pizzorno (Kasabian), Franco Mussida (chitarrista della Premiata Forneria Marconi), Richie Sambora (chitarrista dei Bon Jovi), Ace Frehley e Tommy Thayer (rispettivamente ex e attuale chitarrista nei Kiss), Stef Burns, Neil Young, James Hetfield (cantante e chitarrista dei Metallica), King Buzzo dei Melvins, Bob Marley, John Norum degli Europe, Duane Allman, The Edge, Ray Toro, Steve Jones, Billie Joe Armstrong, Robert Fripp, Adam Jones (chitarrista dei Tool), Aaron Lewis degli Staind, Gary Moore, Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits), Carlos Santana, Alex Lifeson (Rush).
Il 12 agosto 2009, Les Paul muore per le complicazioni di una polmonite all'Ospedale di White Plains, New York.
Il 9 giugno 2011, Google gli ha dedicato un doodle interattivo per celebrarne il 96º compleanno. Il doodle consisteva in una chitarra a sei corde, che era possibile suonare con il mouse o la tastiera.
