Martin Litchfield West

Martin Litchfield West (Londra, 23 settembre 1937) è un filologo inglese, studioso di antichità classica, internazionalmente riconosciuto.

Biografia[modifica]

Nel 2002, dopo aver ricevuto la Kenyon Medal for Classical Studies dalla British Academy, venne indicato come "il grecista più brillante e produttivo della sua generazione."[1] Egli è professore emerito all'All Souls College dell'Università di Oxford.

Egli ha scritto diverse opere sulla musica dell'antica Grecia, relazioni fra Grecia e antico medio oriente e similitudini fra sciamanesimo e primitiva religione dell'antica Grecia, comprese le tradizioni orfiche. Queste opere sono nate da materiale in lingua lingua accadica, fenicia, ebraica, ittita e ugaritico così come dalla lingua greca e dalla latina. Oltre alla similitudini con il vicino oriente, ha recentemente scritto sulla ricostituzione della cultura indo-europea e sulla poesia e la sua influenza sulla Grecia.

Egli ha recentemente prodotto una edizione dell'Iliade di Omero per Teubner, accompagnata da uno studio sulle tradizioni critiche e sulla filologia, Studies in the Text and Transmission of the Iliad.
