Le isole sub-antartiche sono le isole situate nell'Oceano Meridionale a nord del Circolo Polare Antartico (66° 33' 38").

Le isole antartiche sono le isole situate nell'Oceano Meridionale o nei mari antartici a sud del Circolo Polare Antartico.

Secondo quanto stipulato nel Trattato Antartico non sono riconosciute le rivendicazioni territoriali sulle terre situate a sud dei 60° S, sono incluse quindi isole antartiche e sub-antartiche.
