La Daytona 500 è una gara automobilistica che si tiene annualmente al Daytona International Speedway in Florida e facente parte della NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Essa si svolge su una distanza di 200 giri per un totale di 500 miglia (805 km) ed è una delle quattro gare di campionato in cui l'ente organizzatore impone l'uso degli Air restrictor ai motori. Nel 2008 la gara ha celebrato il suo 50º anniversario.

La Daytona 500 è la gara più importante della stagione della NASCAR ed ha il maggior incasso e premio in termini di denaro. Il sistema di punteggio è uguale per ogni altra gara ed è la prima gara della stagione; questo fenomeno è molto inusuale perché di solito il maggior evento di una categoria viene messo a fine stagione. Dal 1995 nei rating della televisione statunitense la Daytona 500 ha superato la Indy 500 e la Daytona 500 è la gara più seguita all'anno. La Daytona 500 del 2006 ha attratto 20 milioni di telespettatori solo negli Stati Uniti.

La Daytona 500 viene denominata il "Super Bowl" dell'automobilismo sportivo. Questa gara è tenuta verso la metà di febbraio dal 1971.

Harley J. Earl Trophy[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

L'Harley J. Earl Trophy è il trofeo che viene assegnato al vincitore della Daytona 500. Questo trofeo è stato intitolato così perché Harley Earl per tanti anni è stato uno dei commisioner più importanti della NASCAR e perciò è stato nominato the father così nominato anche perché è stato "il padre della Corvette" (pace-car ufficiale della Daytona 500).

Il trofeo è anche conservato presso il museo Daytona 500 Experience, adiacente al Daytona International Speedway. Il trofeo è alto circa 4 piedi e largo 5 e alla base è raffigurato un tri-ovale che raffigura il Daytona International Speedway. Invece i vincitore della Daytona 500 fino all 1997 ricevono l'Harley Earl Award.

A partire dal 1998, per celebrare la 40ma edizione, i singoli vincitori della Daytona 500 sono stati presentati con una miniatura dell'Harley J. Earl Trophy, che fu ricreato da John Liba uno scultore da Omaha, Nebraska.
