Artists United Against Apartheid

Artists United Against Apartheid è un progetto voluto da Little Steven Van Zandt, autore della canzone, e Nona Hendrix (sorella di Jimi Hendrix) e da altri artisti americani, inglesi e ovviamente africani. Nato nel 1985 sulla scia di eventi come Band Aid ("Do They Know It's Christmas") e, soprattutto USA for Africa ("We Are The World"), si proponeva di raccogliere fondi da destinare al problema dell'Apartheid in Sudafrica.

Nomi del calibro di Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Cliff, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, solo per citarne alcuni, si cimentarono in questo progetto che produsse un singolo, "Sun City", dal cui testo si evinceva la volontà di non voler più finanziare i bianchi del Sud Africa frequentando i casinò oppure facendo vacanza in questi luoghi, il tutto a discapito della popolazione di colore sfruttata e tenuta praticamente in schiavitù.

Tra gli strumentisti Ringo Starr, Zak Starkey e Tony Williams alla batteria, Pete Townshend, Stanley Jordan, Keith Richards, Ron Wood alle chitarre, Clarence Clemmons al sassofono, Miles Davis alla tromba, Herbie Hancock, Richard Scher, Robbie Kilgore, Zoe Yanakis alle tastiere, Doug Wimbish al basso e Ron Carter al contrabbasso.

Album

Nel 1985 uscì un album contenente il singolo Sun City, che dava il nome all'album stesso.
