Il sistema delle leghe calcistiche inglesi , noto anche come piramide calcistica inglese , è una serie di leghe interconnesse per i club maschili di calcio in Inghilterra , più sei squadre dal Galles e una da Guernsey. Il sistema ha un formato "gerarchico" con promozione e retrocessione tra i diversi livelli, consentendo anche al più piccolo club la possibilità teorica di arrivare al massimo livello della piramide, anche se in pratica a una squadra ai livelli inferiori servirebbero almeno due decenni di allenamenti,acquisti e altro costanti e arrivare sempre primi in ogni lega successiva per raggiungere il livello più alto, e anche allora ci sarebbero altre restrizioni, in particolare per quanto riguarda le strutture dello stadio dei livelli più alti che potrebbero impedire ad un club di accedere a questi ultimi. Ci sono più di 140 leghe individuali, che contengono più di 480 divisioni.

Il numero esatto di club varia da anno in anno in quanto i club si uniscono e lasciano le leghe, ma una media stimata di 15 club per divisione implica che più di 7.000 squadre di quasi 5.300 club sono membri di un campionato nella piramide calcistica inglese.

Poiché non esistono definizioni ufficiali di qualsiasi livello inferiore a 11, i riferimenti alla struttura a livello 12 e inferiore non dovrebbero essere considerati definitivi.

La piramide per il calcio femminile in Inghilterra si esegue separatamente a nove livelli e alcuni club maschili in Inghilterra giocano al di fuori della piramide calcistica inglese.

La Football League è stata creata nel 1888 dal regista dell'Aston Villa William McGregor. Fu dominata da quei club che avevano giocatori che vi militavano per professione (club professionistici). I dodici membri fondatori consistevano in: sei del Lancashire (Blackburn Rovers, Burnley, Bolton Wanderers, Accrington, Everton e Preston North End) e sei delle "Midlands" (Aston Villa, Derby County, Notts County, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion e Wolverhampton Wanderers) . Nessuna squadra del sud, inclusa Londra, ha inizialmente partecipato.

Il sistema è costituito da una piramide di leghe, legate tra loro dal principio della promozione e della retrocessione. Un certo numero di club che hanno avuto maggior successo in ogni campionato può salire nel campionato superiore, mentre quelli che finiscono in fondo al loro campionato possono trovarsi a retrocedere un livello. Oltre alle prestazioni sportive, la promozione è di solito contingente ai criteri stabiliti dalla lega superiore, in particolare per quanto riguarda le strutture e le finanze adeguate.

In teoria è possibile che una squadra amatoriale arrivi al massimo livello del calcio inglese e diventi campione della Premier League . Anche se questo possa essere improbabile in pratica (almeno, in un breve periodo), certamente c'è un movimento significativo all'interno della piramide.

I primi cinque livelli contengono una sola divisione ciascuno e sono nazionali. Al di sotto di questi, i livelli hanno progressivamente più leghe parallele, ognuna delle quali copre aree geografiche progressivamente più piccole. Molti campionati hanno più di una divisione. Ai livelli più bassi l'esistenza di leghe diventa intermittente, anche se in alcune delle aree più densamente popolate ci sono leghe più di venti livelli al di sotto della Premier League. Ci sono anche leghe in varie parti del paese che non sono ufficialmente parte del sistema in quanto non hanno accordi formali con altri campionati, ma sono riconosciuti a vari livelli da associazioni di calcio di contea. I club provenienti da questi campionati possono, se rispettano lo standard adeguato di gioco e dispongono di strutture adeguate, entrare in una lega che fa parte della piramide.

I sette livelli immediatamente sotto la Premier League e la Football League sono conosciuti come il National League System e sono sotto la giurisdizione della Football Association. Nella più recente importante riorganizzazione, due nuove leghe sono state inseriti al livello sei - Conference North e Conference South (ora Conference North e South ) - spostando le prime divisioni della Southern League , Isthmian League e Northern Premier League fino al livello sette. Nel maggio 2014 la Fotball Association ha annunciato piani provvisori per una nuova divisione tra la Football League e la National League che includerebbe squadre "B" di club di livello superiore. Più tardi hanno rinnegato il piano per includere le squadre "B" e, poco dopo, hanno rifiutato l'idea.

Il sistema di lega di calcio inglese non include la versione amatoriale del gioco (che spesso si chiama "The Sunday's Football"). Questi leghe sono entità indipendenti senza promozione o retrocessione che coinvolgono la piramide calcistica. Tuttavia, alcuni club del Sunday's Football si possono unire alle leghe della piramide se desiderano progredire più in alto. Ci sono anche alcune leghe del "Saturday's Football" che non sono ufficialmente parte della piramide, anche se le squadre di queste leghe spesso lasciano queste per le leghe della piramide. La FA ha ammesso una lega del "Saturday's Football" precedentemente non promozionale, la Lega Lincolnshire , entrata nella piramide nel maggio 2017.

Al vertice c'è la Premier League (livello 1, spesso chiamato "top flight"), contenente 20 club, che, fino alla stagione 2010-11 , avevano sede in Inghilterra. Tuttavia, due squadre gallesi ( Swansea City e Cardiff City ) hanno aderito alla stagione 2011-12 e alla stagione 2013-14 ; Anche se da allora Cardiff City è stata relegata alla Football League Championship, Swansea City è rimasta in prima linea fin dalla sua promozione. Sotto la Premier League c'è la English Football League (EFL), divisa in tre divisioni di 24 club ciascuno: la Football League Championship (livello 2), la Football League One (Livello 3) e la Football League Two (livello 4). I 92 club della Premier League e della EFL sono tutti club professionistici a tempo pieno. Sono spesso chiamati club di "Lega" perché, prima della costituzione della Premier League nel 1992, l'EFL includeva tutti i 92 club, in quattro divisioni. I club al di fuori di questo gruppo si riferiscono a club non di lega, anche se giocano la maggior parte del loro calcio in competizioni di lega.

Il campionato non di lega è la National League . Contiene una divisione nazionale ( National League ) di 24 club (livello 5) ed è il livello più basso con un solo campionato nazionale. Ci sono due divisioni al livello 6, una che copre il nord ( National League North ) e una che copre il sud ( National League South ), con 22 club ciascuno. Alcuni di questi club sono professionisti a tempo pieno e gli altri sono semi-professionisti. Sotto la National League, alcuni dei club più forti sono semi-professionistici, ma continuando a scendere i livelli, presto tutti i club sono dilettantistici. Le leghe inferiori tendono anche a soddisfare regioni geografiche progressivamente più piccole.

Successivamente della National League ci sono tre campionati regionali, ognuno associato a diverse aree geografiche, anche se esiste una sovrapposizione. Sono la Northern Premier League (che copre il nord dell'Inghilterra e il Galles del nord), la Southern Football League (che copre le Midlands, sud e sud-ovest dell'Inghilterra e il Galles meridionale) e la Isthmian League Premier Division (che copre il sud-est dell'Inghilterra) . Tutti i campionati hanno una Premier Division di 24 squadre (livello 7). Sotto queste, e suddivisi per regione,ci sono la Northern Premier League e la Southern Football League che dispongono di due divisioni parallele di 22 squadre (livello 8). La Isthmian League ha due divisioni parallele di 8 livelli di 24 squadre ciascuna. Il livello 9 contiene le divisioni principali di un grande gruppo di quattordici leghe subregionali. Ognuno di questi campionati ha un set di divisioni diverso, ma tutti hanno una cosa in comune: ci sono ancora più leghe sotto di esse, ognuna delle quali copre livelli più piccoli e minori.

Regole di promozione e retrocessione per i primi otto livelli[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

  1. Premier League (livello 1, 20 squadre): Le ultime tre squadre sono retrocesse.
  2. English Football League Championship (livello 2, 24 squadre): le prime due promosse automaticamente; le quattro seguenti disputano dei playoff , con il vincitore che ottiene la promozione. Le ultime tre squadre sono retrocesse.
  3. English Football League One (livello 3, 24 squadre): Le prime due sono automaticamente promosse; le quattro seguenti disputano dei playoff, con il vincitore che guadagna la promozione. Gli ultimi quattro sono retrocessi.
  4. English Football League Two (livello 4, 24 squadre): Le prime tre squadre vengono automaticamente promosse; le quattro seguenti disputano dei playoff, con il vincitore che guadagna la promozione. Gli ultimi due sono retrocessi.
  5. National League (livello 5, 24 squadre): I campioni sono promossi; I quattro seguenti disputano dei playoff, con il vincitore che ottiene la promozione. Le ultime quattro sono retrocesse a seconda della posizione geografica nel National League North o South.
  6. National League North e National League South (livello 6, 22 squadre ciascuna, in parallelo): I campioni in ogni divisione vengono promossi automaticamente; Le quattro squadre seguenti in ogni divisione competono nei playoff, con il vincitore del playoff in ogni divisione che ottiene la promozione. Le ultime tre squadre di ogni divisione sono retrocesse alla Northern Premier League Premier Division , Southern Football League Premier Division o Isthmian League, in base alla posizione. Se, dopo la promozione e la retrocessione, il numero di squadre nelle divisioni Nord e Sud non è uguale, una o più squadre vengono trasferite nell'altra.
  7. Northern Premier League Premier Division , Southern Football League Premier Division e Isthmian League Premier Division (livello 7, 24 squadre ciascuna, in parallelo): i campioni di ogni divisione vengono automaticamente promossi; Le quattro squadre seguenti di ogni divisione competono nei playoff, con il vincitore del playoff in ogni divisione che ottiene la promozione. Le ultime quattro di ciascuna divisione sono relegate ad una divisione di livello 8. Se, dopo la promozione e la retrocessione, il numero di squadre nelle divisioni non è uguale, una o più squadre vengono trasferite tra le tre divisioni fino a rendere il numero di squadre di ogni divisione uguale.
  8. Northern Premier League Division One North , Northern Premier League Division One South , Southern Football League Division One Central , Southern Football League Division One South & West , Isthmian League Division One North e Isthmian League Division One South (livello 8, in parallelo, 22 Squadre in ciascuna delle divisioni Southern e Northern , e 24 squadre in ogni Isthmian Division del livello 8): i campioni di ogni divisione vengono automaticamente promossi; Le quattro squadre seguenti in ogni divisione competono nei playoff, con il vincitore del playoff in ogni divisione che ottiene la promozione. Le ultime due squadre in ciascuna divisione Northern Premier League e Southern Football League divisione livello 8 e le tre squadre inferiori in ogni Divisione Isthmian League level 8 sono retrocesse ad una divisione di livello 9. Se, dopo la promozione e la retrocessione, il numero di squadre nelle divisioni non è uguale, una o più squadre vengono trasferite tra le divisioni.
