Waylon Jennings (Littlefield, 15 giugno 1937 – Chandler, 13 febbraio 2002) è stato un musicista statunitense, attivo nel genere della musica country.

Biografia

È stato uno fra i più conosciuti interpreti della musica popolare statunitense e sua fu l'idea di creare un nuovo movimento che procedesse a rivoluzionare un ambiente che giudicava ormai bloccato su stereotipi superati.

Per questo fondò nel 1976 un gruppo estemporaneo di cui facevano parte Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter e Tompall Glaser chiamato The Outlaws, che incise per la RCA un album di brani country intitolato Wanted - The Outlaws.

A Jennings la città natale - Littlefield, in Texas - ha dedicato una strada, il Waylon Jennings Boulevard

L'album fu il primo del genere country a vendere oltre un milione di copie. Il pezzo che apriva il disco, My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys, divenne il pezzo più noto di Jennings, quasi una sorta di marchio di fabbrica. Nel 1979 ha avuto un grande successo con Good Old Boys, canzone resa famosa dal telefilm The Dukes of Hazzard, in cui la sua voce narrava gli avvenimenti degli episodi. Negli anni ottanta ha fatto parte dei The Highwaymen, un supergruppo country formato, oltre a lui, da Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson e Kris Kristofferson.

Nel 1985 ha partecipato ad USA for Africa, un supergruppo di 45 celebrità della musica pop tra cui Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder e Bruce Springsteen, cantando We Are the World prodotta da Quincy Jones e incisa a scopo benefico. I proventi raccolti con We Are the World sono stati devoluti alla popolazione dell'Etiopia, afflitta in quel periodo da una disastrosa carestia. Il brano ha vinto il Grammy Award come "canzone dell'anno", come "disco dell'anno", e come "miglior performance di un duo o gruppo vocale pop".
