All'inizio della guerra di indipendenza americana (1775-1783) Boston rimane occupata dagli Inglesi, ma è isolata perché 20.000 ribelli bloccano l'istmo che la collega al continente.
Nella notte del 16 giugno questi riescono ad occupare con 1500 uomini agli ordini del colonnello Israel Putnam le colline di Breed's Hill e Bunker Hill, site nella penisola di Charlestown che si trova a nord del porto della città.

La battaglia [modifica]
Dopo aver bombardato all'alba del 17 giugno le postazioni degli insorti, verso mezzogiorno sbarcarono 2200 Inglesi.
Prima della battaglia - secondo una leggenda - il colonnello Prescott avrebbe detto ai suoi soldati di sparare non appena avessero visto "il bianco degli occhi" dei soldati inglesi.
Nel pomeriggio, dopo tre assalti, il generale inglese John Pitcairn riuscì con i suoi uomini a espugnare la posizione ma i soldati dovettero finire l' attacco con le baionette perché avevano esaurito le munizioni , lasciando però sul terreno, fra morti e feriti, il 40% dei propri soldati.
Dal canto loro, gli americani si ritirarono con ordine sul continente. Sconfitti, lasciavano tuttavia sul campo pochi uomini, dimostrando di essere un esercito degno di tale nome.
Gli inglesi nelle varie colonie erano il triplo dei ribelli, ed erano anche meglio addestrati, e commisero l'errore di sopravvalutarsi perché l' esercito Americano non era addestrato e i generali ribelli non erano molto bravi nella strategia

La guerra proseguirà per altri otto anni: dal Canada caleranno due armate inglesi, agli ordini dei generali William Howe e John Burgoyne, che non riusciranno a riunirsi poiché il 17 ottobre 1777 Burgoyne viene sconfitto dal generale americano Horatio Gates a Saratoga Springs. Successivamente, con l'aiuto dei Francesi gli Americani batteranno definitivamente gli Inglesi nel 1783 con la battaglia di Cuddalore e la fine della campagna delle indie orientali. Così gli sarà riconosciuta l' indipendenza
