La teoria di Albert Einstein della relatività generale prevede che i corpi rotanti trascinano lo spazio-tempo intorno a loro in un fenomeno riferito come effetto di trascinamento o frame-dragging. L'effetto di trascinamento rotazionale venne per prima dedotto dalla teoria della relatività generale nel 1918 dai fisici austriaci Josef Lense e Hans Thirring, ed è anche noto come effetto Lense-Thirring. [1][2][3] Lense e Thirring avevano previsto che la rotazione di un oggetto alterera spazio e tempo, trascinando un oggetto vicino fuori dalla posizione contrariamente alle previsioni della fisica newtoniana. L'effetto previsto è piccolo — circa una parte per trilione. Per rilevarlo è necessario esaminare un oggetto molto massivo, o costruire uno strumento che sia molto sensibile. Più in generale, il tema degli effetti di campo causati dal materia in movimento è noto come gravitomagnetismo.
