Stephen Flowers

Stephen Edred Flowers (Bonham, 1953) è un runologo statunitense e un divulgatore dell'occultismo e del Paganesimo germanico.

L'autore ha pubblicato dozzine di libri e centinaia di opuscoli sulle materie più varie. È anche conosciuto con lo pseudonimo di Edred Thorsson. Flowers sostiene la "Runologia esoterica" o "Odianesimo", una branca esoterica del Paganesimo germanico.[1]

Flowers si laureò in filologia germanica e celta con il professore Edgar Polomé alla University of Texas at Austin e lavorò con lui dal 1973 fino al 1984. Nel 1981-1982 studiò la storia dell'occultismo alla Università Georg-August di Gottinga in Germania. Ricevette la laurea in lingue germaniche e medioevali nel 1984 con una tesi intitolata Rune e Magia: Formulari Magici Elementari nella Tradizione degli Antichi. Dal 1984 al 1989 fu docente del Dipartimento di Inglese e di Lingue Germaniche alla University of Texas e in Filologia all'Austin Community College.

Flowers fu veramente di valido aiuto all'inizio della formazione del Paganesimo nordico nel Nord America e fu attivo nelle organizzazioni occulte che seguivano la Via della mano sinistra.

Flowers entrò nella Chiesa di Satana nel 1972 anche se ha dichiarato di ricevere solamente la loro newsletter, "The Cloven Hoof."[2] Nel novembre 1983 fondò un piccolo gruppo "sotterraneo" all'Odinismo chiamato The Order of Shining Trapezohedron("O.S.T.") che venne chiuso 3 mesi dopo.[3] L'esperienza nell'O.S.T. venne seguita dall'entrata nel Tempio di Set, nella quale tiene il grado di Ipsissimus VI°. Nel Tempio di Set fu Grande Maestro dell'Order of the Trapezoid dal gennaio del 1987 fino al giugno del 1996.[4]

Flowers fu uno dei primi membri dell'Asatru Folk Assembly. Nel 1979 Flowers fondò la Rune-Gild, un ordine iniziatico incentrato sulla "rinascita delle antiche rune".

Flowers è attualmente il direttore esecutivo, o Yrmin Drighten, del Rune-Gild. Come progetto per il Rune-Gild, Flowers fondò l'organizzazione Asatru Ring of Troth nel 1987 (che attualmente si chiama semplicemente The Troth). Flowers non è più affiliato col The Troth. Flowers fu coinvolto dall'Order of the Triskelion e da altri ordini occulti.

Ora Flowers è il direttore del Woodharrow Institute per gli studi germanici ed è il proprietario della casa editrice Runa-Raven Press.

Oltre a essere uno scrittore davvero prolifico, Flowers è conosciuto per aver tradotto manoscritti dall'Islandese, dal Norreno e dal Tedesco in Inglese, rendendoli disponibili per la prima volta.

Critiche [modifica]

Nel 1989, Flowers fu espulso dall'Odinic rite per la sua Lettera aperta ai vertici del Movimento Asatru/Odinista/The Troth dove spiegò la sua partecipazione nel Tempio di Set.[5]

Sweyn Plowright, un membro del Rune-Gild che lasciò l'organizzazione nel 2000,[6] chiama la filosofia di Flowers come "neosatanica" antinomica.[7]
