History[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Founded by Claudio Abbado, the orchestra debuts under him on January the 25th 1982 with Mahler's Symphony No.3. In the early years, the Philharmonic is under the conductors[[Georges Prêtre],[[Lorin Maazel],[[Wolfgang Sawallisch], and[Carlo Maria Giulini], who guides the Orchestra on its first tours abroad. From 1987 to 2005 Riccardo Muti (who has been the Music Conductor of the Theatre from 1986) becomes the Chief Conductor. In 1996 and 1999 he conducts the Orchestra Filarmonica at the Festwochen in Wien and he gives concerts at the Salzburg and Lucerne festivals and in the main capitals of Europe and Asia. With Riccardo Muti, moreover, the Filarmonica has been the protagonist of concerts for the Ravenna Festival in some places symbol of contemporary history: Sarajevo (1997), Beirut (1998), Jerusalem (1999), Moscow (2000), Istanbul (2001), New York (2002).

Concerts abroad[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

The first concert abroad is conducted by Claudio Abbado in Lugano in 1983.

In the last few years, we particularly remember the activities of 2007, with the concerts at Lugano with Daniel Barenboim, Monaco with Daniele Gatti and the US and Canada debut with Riccardo Chailly, with concerts at [ ]], Toronto, Washington, Philadelphia, and New York.

In September 2008 Myung-Whun Chung leads a tour that marks the return to Japan and Korea with the participation of [Lang Lang], and the debut in China. Among the commitments of the 2008/2009 season, the return to Musikverein with Daniele Gatti in November, and the debut at Philharmonie with Berlin with Daniel Barenboim in April; With Barenboim the Philharmonic was also in Athens, Istanbul, Luxembourg and Wiesbaden in July 2010, while 2011 saw the return to Georges Prêtre's podium for a series of concerts in France and Spain. Subsequent tours saw the orchestra on Salle Pleyel Paris, Alte Oper Frankfurt on the Main Frankfurt and Philharmonie Berlin with Daniel Barenboim on the podium and the piano, and again with Daniel Harding in Prague, Linz, Stuttgart, Bonn and Dresden; The Philharmonic has also been present at the St. Petersburg White Nights Festival with Valery Gergiev and again in Germany with Fabio Luisi.

Institutional model[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Formally set up as a private organization in 1983, it distinguishes itself for its democratic self-governance. The model somewhat follows in the footsteps of the Wiener Philharmoniker. The members are selected from the orchestra of the Opera House. The foremost ruling body of the organization is the full orchestra membership itself. The officials are elected by the general assembly and they are responsible for all management matters on top of their duties as musicians. The shareholders' meeting elects the Board of Directors, in office for three years, consisting of ten orchestral musicians and seven external advisers from Milan's business and cultural world, which in turn nominates the President and the Artistic Director. The orchestra does not receive public funds to finance its activities. As a matter of fact, the Filarmonica is supported by its main partner UniCredit and sponsor Allianz.

The first president is Carlo Maria Badini, who is Superintendent of Teatro alla Scala at the same time, and the vice president is the violinist Giacomo Pogliani. According to the Wiener Philharmoniker model, the orchestra does not first nominate a Chief Conductor: the charge is offered to Riccardo Muti in 1987. In 1990, the new Superintendent of the Theater [[Carlo Fontana (theatrical director] Carlo Fontana] follows to Badini as President; the violinist Ernesto Schiavi has been Vice-president since 1987.

The Statute is amended in 1990: Claudio Abbado in nominated as Founder, to the Honorary Director of the Theater is assigned the honorary presidency; the new president is Fedele Confalonieri, while Schiavi remains as the vice-president. In 1999, the violinist Gianluca Scandola assumed the position of artistic coordinator and assumed the management of the Association, following the resignation of Schiavi as Vice President. In 2005 the new elections brought Schiavi to the then unpublished Artistic Director.

Riccardo Muti, following a long conflict with the Superintendent Carlo Fontana and following the almost unanimous mistrust of the theater workers, resigns from the Music Director of the Theater and from the Principal Director of the Philharmonic. With him he resigns President Fedele Confalonieri. New President is the lawyer Cesare Rimini, which will be confirmed, while Vice-President is the oboe Francesco Di Rosa. Following the elections of 2015, Jean Pierre Mustier, UniCredit is appointed as Managing Director, while Vice-President is hired by the English horn Renato Duca.
