Mapping Japanese Hiragana and Katakana for On-Wiki Search
Ciao—sorry for posting in English. (Aiutaci a tradurre nella tua lingua.) I am working on enabling a mapping between Japanese hiragana and katakana for searching on English-language wikis. For example, this would allow おおかみ and オオカミ (both "wolf") to match each other in a search. This is something that would probably be easy to enable for all Italian-language projects as well. - mi pare che lui abbia detto che darebbero lo stesso risultato, non che dà la precedenza all'uno o all'altro. Però non lo vedo come un problema lo stesso, i risultati sarebbero comunque pochi sulla Wikipedia italiana, è facile guardare tutti i risultati. [@ TJones (WMF)] He's asking if any priority is given to the results written exactly in the same way you've typed them. E.g. if someone types おおかみ, will the results in hiragana appear first, or will both be considered the same? Anyway, I don't think it's a real problem. Words written in Japanese are few in latin alphabet Wikis, it's no matter if the hiragana and katakana results are mixed, you can see all of the results at a glance. - [@ Lombres] Thanks for the translation! Exact matches usually get preference in ranking, so if you search for おおかみ, I would expect おおかみ to come before オオカミ, if all other things are relatively equal. (Things that are unequal would be one article has the word in the title while another does not, or the word occurs in one article many times but in the other only once, or one article gets many more views and has many more links to it than the other, or effects of other words in the search.) You can see similar differences by searching for cavallo, cavalla, or cavalli. They all get the same 34,968 results, but they are sorted differently because of the influence of the exact matches.
