Il Premio Bancroft è assegnato ogni anno dalla giuria della Columbia University per libri sulla diplomazia o sulla storia delle Americhe. Fu istituito nel 1948 da un lascito di Frederic Bancroft. Esso consiste in uno stipendio di 10 000 $ (elevato da 4 000 nel 2004). Diciassette vincitori ebbero il sostegno, nella loro opera, dal National Endowment for the Humanities, e sedici vincitori ricevettero anche il Premio Pulitzer per la storia.[1]
Il premio fu turbato da una controversia post-assegnazione che riguardava l'assegnazione a Michael A. Bellesiles, che ricevette il premio per un suo lavoro nel 2001. A seguito di accertamenti successivi, la Columbia University annullò l'assegnazione per la prima volta nella storia del premio.
