La forma anidra contiene unità cristalline di FeF6 di forma ottaedrica che condividono i vertici [1] Quando riscaldate sotto vuoto si decompone per formare FeF2 e F2 (gassoso) [1] In the gas phase at 1260°K the structure is planar D3h with an Fe-F bond length of 176.3pm.[2].
