Rare LTD. è una azienda di produzione di videogiochi inglese. Fondata all'inizio degli anni ottanta dai fratelli Tim e Chris Stamper, l'azienda si chiamava inizialmente "Ultimate Play the Game", specializzata in titoli per home computer a 8-bit come ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 e BBC Micro. Nel 1988 l'azienda cambia nome (diventando Rare) e comincia la produzione di molti titoli per console, in particolare per quelle Nintendo; proprio la casa giapponese a partire dal 1994 stringerà un accordo per la produzione di titoli in esclusiva. Nel 2002, Rare è stata acquisita da Microsoft.[1]

Rare si trova a Twycross, nel Leicestershire. La società è dietro molti dei più famosi giochi Nintendo per i vari sistemi di gioco: Battletoads, GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Diddy Kong Racing, Star Fox Adventures, le serie Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Banjo-Kazooie.

I suoi giochi hanno spesso utilizzato tecnologie grafiche all'avanguardia. Una delle sue più popolari e acclamate serie è stata la serie Donkey Kong Country per Super Nintendo Entertainment System, a causa del suo uso di grafica 2D pre-renderizzata che dava l'impressione di tridimensionalità.

Nel 2002, mentre i fan Nintendo si aspettavano nuovi giochi del team per Gamecube, l'azienda inglese fu contattata da Microsoft che fece un'offerta per rilevare la società. Dal 2003 Rare è una Second-party Microsoft, e non può più sviluppare per le console da casa Nintendo, ossia il Gamecube prima e il Wii ora. Tuttavia, non essendoci alcuna clausola riguardante le console portatili, Rare continua a sviluppare titoli per Nintendo DS. Finora sono stati sviluppati due titoli, Diddy Kong Racing, remake dell'originale per Nintendo 64, e Viva Pinata Pocket Paradise, da molti ritenuto il peggior capitolo della serie. Rare ha riportato alcuni dei suoi vecchi franchise sulle console Microsoft, Conker, Banjo-Kazooie, Jetpac e Perfect Dark, creando un seguito però solo di Perfect Dark. La Microsoft è ritenuta responsabile per la cancellazione di molti seguiti, come Conker's Other Bad Day[2], Perfect Dark Core[3] e Kameo 2[4]. Con grande delusione per molti fan, all' E3 2010 Rare annuncia il suo titolo di lancio per Kinect, Kinect Sports, attirandosi l' odio di molti fan che non fanno che chiedere per nuovi giochi delle loro vecchie serie[5][6][7]. Negli anni, su internet, sono state anche create diverse petizioni, tra cui quella per avere un seguito di Conker. Sebbene non abbia confermato nulla, sul proprio sito la Rare ha più volte annunciato che sono attualmente in corso solamente lavori per altri giochi Kinect, tra cui un seguito di Kinect Sports.

  • Nei videogiochi Rare, abbondano i cameo, ovvero i riferimenti ad altri videogiochi o film; solitamente ad altri videogiochi e quasi sempre della Rare.
  • Altra caratteristica abbastanza tipica dei giochi Rare è il finale aperto per dare possibilità ad un seguito (nonostante raramente ne abbiano avuto uno).
  • Inoltre, la Rare mette spesso elementi "maturi" in giochi classificati dai tre anni in su.
