Nea Salamis Famagusta or Nea Salamina Famagusta (Official name: Athletic Club Nea Salamis Famagusta) is a Cypriot sport club based in Famagosta (also known by its Romanized name: Famagusta), Cipro. The club is named after the ancient city of Cyprus, Salamina, which is located nearby modern Famagosta. Today, the club maintains departments for men's Calcio (sport) and Pallavolo. It previously operated football departments for women too, as well as track and field, Sport acquatici and Tennistavolo.

The club was founded on 7 March 1948 in order to avoid the political conflicts of that time. The other athletic clubs of Famagusta, Evagoras Gymnastic Association GSE (in greco Γυμναστικός Σύλλογος Ευαγόρας?) and Anorthosi Ammochostou, imposed restrictions onSinistra (politica) athletes. In May 1948, the athletes of Nea Salamina refused to sign a declaration of "nationalist conscience", the Hellenic Amateur Athletic Association (SEGAS), banned the athletes of Nea Salamina from entering the GSE Stadium.

This club and other newly established clubs of the same kind founded the Cyprus Amateur Football Federation (CAFF), which organizes championships and cups alongside the Federazione calcistica di Cipro (CFA). Eventually, the two federations came together in 1953 and Nea Salamina became a member of the CFA. Since the 1974 Invasione turca di Cipro of the north part of the island, Nea Salamina has been a "Rifugiato" team and has been temporarily based in Larnaca since then.

Nea Salamis Famagosta (calcio) (men), is the oldest of the club's departments, founded in 1948. Nea Salamis' greatest moment was winning the Coppa di Cipro and the Supercoppa di Cipro (Super Cup) in 1990. The football team is currently based at Ammochostos Stadium in Larnaka. From 2006 until 2010 the club had a women's soccer department.

The volleyball team (men) is one of the most important in Cyprus. The team organized volleyball tournaments with great participation from 1954 in Famagusta to 1975 and finally decided to set up a volleyball section in Limisso. The team won 9 Campionato cipriota di pallavolo maschile, 7 cups and 8 shields with six consecutive championships and cups from 1998 until 2003. The ground of the volleyball team is in Limassol, the indoor athletic arena Spyros Kyprianou Athletic Center. From 1978 to 1985 the club had a women's volleyball department.

Emblem and colors[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

The emblem of Nea Salamina was the Fiamma olimpica. Completed with the introduction of Reds color, while added to Scudo (difesa)the Simboli olimpici of the Giochi olimpici.[1] The first colors of Nea Salamina were yellow and crimson.[1][2] The team bore those for two years in the league of Cyprus Amateur Football Federation. After 1950, the Governing Council decided to establish red and white as the colors of the team.[1][2] The recommendation was based on the thought that the red symbolizes the power and the white peace. The red jerseys with white stripes were preferred because they resembled Olympiakos Piraeus.[1]
