Charles Chree (Loch of Lintrathen (ex Forfarshire), Scozia, 5 maggio 1860 – Worthing West Sussex, 12 agosto 1928) è stato un fisico, FRS britannico.
Charles Chree, è stato un'autorità nelle ricerche sul magnetismo terrestre e sull'elettricità atmosferica, e per 32 anni ha servito nella carica di Superintendent of Kew Observatory.[1]
Chree era il secondo figlio del reverendo Charles Chree e non era sposato..[1][2]

[modifica | modifica wikitesto]He was educated at the Grammar School, Old Aberdeen, the University of Aberdeen where he graduated MA in 1879 and the University of Cambridge where he graduated as Sixth Wrangler (MA, 1883).[1]

- 1895 - Grado di D.Sc. dall'università di Cambridge
- 1897 - Eletto FRS[1]
- 1898 - Grado LL.D. da Aberd.[1]
- 1905 - Medaglia James Watt medal dall'ICE.[4]
- 1908 - He was President of the Physical Society of London between 1908 and 1910.
- 1919 - Medahlia Royal Society Hughes Medal "for his researches in terrestrial magnetism".[1]
- 1922 - Chree served as president of the Royal Meteorological Society from 1922 to 1923.[5]
- 1893--1925 - He was appointed Superintendent of Kew Observatory in 1893, a post he retained until 1925, a remarkably long period of 32 years.[1] During his tenure of office he was responsible for testing thousands of chronometers, watches, thermometers and other scientific instruments,[1] success in which tests gained the award of a "Kew Certificate".
The Chree Medal and Prize of the Institute of Physics was named for him. The awards were renamed in 2008.
