The "Rotonda a mare" is a structure, born for hidrotherapeutic and recreative ends, that faces the Senigallia sea, today seat of expositions and meetings during the summertime, in addition to some events connected to the famous "Summer Jamboree" that recalls the American's 50's

History[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

The "Rotonda a mare" 's history starts in the second half of the XIX century, when the architect Vincenzo Ghinelli planned a structure on pile-works in front of the "Stabilimento Bagni". In 1910 the Platform, which was situated a few hundreds of metres north of the present position of the "Rotonda", was enlarged and entrusted to private entrepreneurs that changed it in the "Bagni" hotel, in its turn restructured since 1923. This new intervention substantially expected the maintenance of the Platform's base form, rectangular and lengthened and in liberty style, but replacing wood with more resistant materials, particularly for what concerns the access wharf, the platform, the bath closets and the zone used for the walk, extended to 4 metres and protracted in the sea direction.[1]

The decision of moving the Platform in its present position, in correspondence with "Della Penna" large square, was taken on 30th January 1932 by the "Comitato Amministrativo dell'Azienda Autonoma Stazione di Cura e Soggiorno" that chose the engineer Enrico Cardelli's project, which expected a substantial modification of the structure by giving it the present "shell" form that then made it famous. Giovanni Monti Guarnieri (the president), Manlio Cremonini, Ciro Calef, Ermanno Marzocchi, Enrico Mersi, Giuseppe Natale Marzi, Bernardino Jonni, Edgardo Menchetti, Bettino Padovano and Aldo Ghinelli took part in the sitting of the "Comitato".[2]

The works were started and they permitted to inaugurate the structure on 18th July 1933, in a short time famous for its music ground nights so that on 7th July 1935 the then Prince Umberto visited Senigallia to admire the "Rotonda" and to inaugurate the "Colonia Marina Maria Pia di Savoia".

During the Second World War the Rotonda served as a military warehouse, but once the conflict ended it returned, especially in the 50's and 60's, at the center of the world attracting many tourists and artists of the first order of Italian light music. It was thought by some to be the place that would have inspired the text of the famous song "Una rotonda sul mare", sung by Fred Bongusto. In reality the song was inspired by the author Franco Migliacci from the roundabout that stood on the Passignano sul Trasimeno lake on admission of the same, to which the municipality of Passignano conferred honorary citizenship. Migliacci frequented this place as a boy, when in the summer he resided in the nearby town of Cortona. However, success declined over time, and the Rotonda was closed in the late 80's because it was declared unfit.

What was once an important tourist site was closed to the public until the summer of 2006, when the renovation work financed by the municipality and the European Union came to an end. Today there are held, especially during the summer, exhibitions and conferences of various kinds, and it is also possible to celebrate weddings.[3] Also there are during the Summer Jamboree (an event reminiscent of the American 50s) some Champ of rock and roll and dances of the time. There are also Winter Jamboree evenings held during the winter period.

Autonomous Care Company and Senigallia Residence[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

In 1928 Senigallia, with Cortina d'Ampezzo, was recognized as the seat of the first ‘Autonomous Care Company and Residence' of Italy. The role of the new agency ranges from the reception and tourist information, to the promotion of events, to the management of the rescue service, to the management of the cleanliness of the beach, to the collection of the Tourist Tax. The Company was an institution governed by public law, independent from administration and its most famous work was the construction of the Rotonda a Mare, which it managed until 1988.[4]

The presidents of the Autonomous Care Company and Senigallia Residence were:
