Frances is the son of a wealthy couple named Bernice and Bertram Benson. Frances is a free spirit who loves his brown boots Bertram gave him for Christmas. An art dealer named Karl Kepler plans to buy a reproduction of the painting "Whistler's Mother" they own, but he plans to drive the Bensons out of their fortune. Frances is walking home from school one day, when he gets sore from walking and decides to take off his boots. He soon discovers that he loves his bare feet in lieu of him loving his boots. He notices that Kepler has plans to steal the painting, so Frances decides to bring the painting back, abandoning his boots in the process. He sneaks into Kepler's van and he is unaware of a stowaway. At Kepler's apartment, Frances quietly makes his way to the painting and, soon Kepler notices that Frances is trying to bring the stolen painting home, and enraged, Kepler sends his henchmen after him. Frances decides to use his feet to beat them down. Mr. and Mrs. Benson are shocked to see Frances with the painting. He tells them about Kepler stealing the painting, and they inform the police. Frances should end his barefoot adventure, but he decides to go barefoot for the rest of his life.
