Origine e diffusione [modifica]
Si tratta della forma irlandese di Giovanni[1][2], che deriva dall'antico nome ebraico יְהֹוחָנָן (Yəhôḥānān), che significa "YHWH ha favorito" o "YHWH è grazioso". La forma "Shane" prese piede negli Stati Uniti in seguito all'uscita del film western Il cavaliere della valle solitaria nel 1953[4].

Il nome è adespota, cioè non è portato da alcun santo. L'onomastico ricade dunque il 1º novembre, giorno di Ognissanti, ma si può festeggiare in alternativa lo stesso giorno del nome Giovanni, di cui è una variante.
