Il Minimo di Dalton fu un periodo di bassa attività solare che andò dal 1790 al 1830 circa. Fu così chiamato dal nome del meteorologo inglese John Dalton che lo osservò[1]. Come il Minimo di Maunder e il Minimo di Spörer, il minimo di Dalton coincise con un periodo di temperature globali sotto media. Per esempio, la stazione meteorologica di Oberlach, Germania, registrò una diminuzione di 2 °C in venti anni.[2] Inoltre, il cosiddetto "anno senza estate", il 1816, si verificò in pieno minimo.
La causa precisa del calo sotto media delle temperature, registrato durante il periodo del minimo, non è stata ancora ben capita, ma una delle tesi più accreditate afferma che, vista la concomitanza dei flare con le macchie solari, in questi periodi di minimo diminuisca anche l'energia emanata.
