Caroline Kepnes (Barnstable, 10 novembre 1976) è una scrittrice, sceneggiatrice ed ex giornalista di intrattenimento statunitense,autrice del romanzo You, che ha ispirato la realizzazione dell'omonima serie televisiva targata Netflix. [1]

Ha pubblicato diversi racconti e si è occupata di cultura pop per l'Entertainment Weekly, Tiger Beat e Yahoo.

È autrice di diversi show televisivi tra cui 7th Heaven e The Secret Life of the American Teenager.

Come regista ha vinto numerosi premi con il cortometraggio Miles Away.

Raggiunge la notorietà per i suoi libri You , Hidden Bodies e Providence: A Novel . [2]

Il suo primo romanzo You ha avuto un grande successo ed è stato tradotto in diciannove lingue, finalista per un CWA New Blood Award, e trasformato in un'omonima serie televisiva andata in onda negli Stati Uniti su Lifetime e distribuita internazionalmente su Netflix.

Il suo secondo romanzo, Hidden Bodies, è un sequel che la Booklist descrive come “the love child of Holden Caulfield and Patrick Bateman.”[3] Il suo romanzo più recente è Providence .

Ora scrive a tempo pieno e vive a Los Angeles.

Caroline Kepnes è nata nella città di Barnstable ubicata nella penisola di Cape Cod protesa nell'Oceano Atlantico, nel Massachusetts . Durante i suoi anni formativi, ha frequentato la High School di Barnstable. Dopo la laurea, ha iniziato i suoi studi presso la Brown University dove ha conseguito una laurea in Civiltà americana. Caroline ha lavorato come giornalista di cultura pop per Entertainment Weekly e come sceneggiatrice televisiva per 7th Heaven,The Secret Life of the American Teenager e l’adattamento di You .[4]

Nel 2014, Kepnes ha pubblicato il suo primo romanzo della serie thriller, You . [5] [6] Kepnes ha spiegato l'oscurità di You , che demolisce i fondamenti della commedia romantica evidenziati in molti film e serie, rendendo il maschio interessato ad una donna uno stalker violento e dicendo che è stato scritto in un periodo buio della sua vita, l'anno in cui suo padre è morto di cancro e in cui ha vissuto diverse altre sfide personali. Nel febbraio 2015, è stato annunciato che Greg Berlanti e Sera Gamble avrebbero sviluppato una serie televisiva basata sul romanzo.[8] [9] Due anni più tardi, la serie TV è stata acquistata da Lifetime ed è stata messa in produzione velocemente. [10] Il primo episodio della serie è stato trasmesso su Lifetime il 9 settembre 2018. [11] Il 26 luglio 2018, in vista della messa in onda della prima serie, la rete TV Lifetime ha annunciato che la serie era stata rinnovata per una seconda stagione.[12][13] Il 3 dicembre 2018, è stato confermato che Lifetime era passata a produrre la seconda stagione e che Netflix aveva raccolto la serie. Nel 2016, Kepnes ha pubblicato un sequel di You , Hidden Bodies [15] , da cui sarà tratta la seconda stagione della serie di thriller Netflix , You . [16]

Il suo terzo romanzo, Providence , pubblicato nel 2018, è stato descritto come romanzo-suspense-thriller, con aspetti soprannaturali.[17] [18]Alison Flood, in una recensione pubblicata da The Guardian , ha scritto "Providence is compelling, and Kepnes provides a sometimes piercing insight into the small, strange, sad details that make up a life, though without quite achieving the deep, dark pleasures of You" ("La Provvidenza è avvicente, e Kepnes offre una visione a volte penetrante dei piccoli, strani e tristi dettagli che costituiscono una vita, sebbene senza raggiungere i piaceri profondi e oscuri di You").
