Lo Spreco alimentare è il fenomeno della perdita di cibo, ancora buono per essere consumato da esseri umani, che si ha lungo tutta la catena di produzione e di consumo del cibo. Le cause di spreco alimentare sono numerose, dagli scarti nella produzione agricola fino alle cucine dei consumatori. Si stima che ogni anno, un terzo di tutto il cibo prodotto per il consumo dell'uomo vada sprecato. Secondo quanto stima l'Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per l'alimentazione e l'agricoltura (FAO) in media una persona che vive in Europa o Nord America spreca intorno ai 95-115 kg all'anno, mentre nell'Africa subsahariana intorno ai 6-11 kg all'anno.[1] Ci sono moltissime altre cause di spreco, oltre che per i consumatori, molte delle perdite avvengono durante le fasi della produzione, lavorazione vendita e conservazione del cibo.
