  • Demon Series
    1. The Painted Man (2008), Amazon (64 rec)
Trama: The first novel in the Demon Series introduces a world formerly the home of an advanced human civilisation, now reduced to a 'dark age' by the attacks of demons, known as 'corelings'. The corelings are powerful beings, with magical abilities and differing elemental natures, and each night emerge from the planet's core to feed on humans. The story is told from the perspective of three main characters, Arlen, Leesha and Rojer, showing their passage from childhood to maturity and the beginning of their individual quests to bring an end to the terror that has befallen humankind.
    2. The Desert Spear (2010): Amazon (29 rec)
    3. The Daylight War (2012?)

Steven Erikson[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

The rest of fantasy is beginning to catch up with the slow-writing Martin, including the amazing Steven Erikson. His mammoth Malazan series has some critics, who claim various problems with the storyline, but this series which begins with is a tour-de-force. It is not for those who wish to follow a single storyline or event; it is a very complex world with complex rules. Erikson's writing also doesn't make it easy to follow; he assumes you know what is going on, and therefore doesn't explain it like most other writers. The series (9 books of 10 so far) follows a number of very detailed but accessible races (and tribes within races) on three continents. One major race is the humans of the Malazan Empire who are attempting (not very effectively) to occupy and capture the other two continents which are being defended by a non-aboriginal ancient race and two separate religious fanatics. There are numerous factions also in play which, unlike Martin, include gods and demi-gods where certain selected characters 'ascend' to have godly powers and status. It is extremely well-done. Unfortunately, the events from the first couple of books don't necessarily flow in chronological order- the reader needs to piece together the timeframe of events as some books actually take place over a longer period of time than others. Erikson provides the dates and details effectively enough for my liking, but not for other readers. If you don't like the first book, don't read on. If you do like it, you will be rewarded. This series is either the best you've read or the worst!

Ian C. Esslemont[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

  • Night of Knives (2004)
Trama:On a Shadow Moon night on the Isle of Malaz, dead souls rise and demonlike hounds attack any who dare to leave their homes. Knowing that Emperor Kellanved is prophesied to use the Shadow Moon for his own ends, the emperor's enemies gather on the small island for their own nefarious purposes, starting a plot that spirals into bloody violence. Esslemont nails the feel and flavor of Erickson's books and brings the historical characters to life with a dexterity that will win over even the most skeptical fans.
  • Return of the Crimson Guard (2010)

Robin Hobb[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

  • Lungavista
    1. L'apprendista assassino, google books
    2. L'assassino di corte

N.K. Jemisin[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

  • The Inheritance Trilogy
    1. The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (2010), Amazon (40 rec)
      • Qualche commento pesantemente negativo su amazon
      • Trama: Yeine desires nothing more than a normal life in her barbarian homeland of Darr. But her mother was of the powerful Arameri family, and when Yeine is summoned to the capital city of Sky a month after her mother's murder, she cannot refuse. Dakarta, her grandfather and the Arameri patriarch, pits her against her two cousins as a potential heir to the throne. In an increasingly deep Zelaznyesque series of political maneuverings, Yeine, nearly powerless but fiercely determined, finds potential allies among her relatives and the gods who are forced to live in Sky as servants after losing an ancient war. Multifaceted characters struggle with their individual burdens and desires, creating a complex, edge-of-your-seat story with plenty of funny, scary, and bittersweet twists.

Robert Jordan[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Scott Lynch[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Scott Lynch has come out of nowhere to write one of the greatest stand alone fantasy novel debuts ever. The Lies of Locke Lamora is one of a new movement of fantasy stories taking place solely within an urban setting and combines wonderfully witty characters, especially the title character and his group of thieves with a clever and unexpected storyline. With elaborate plots, the 'Gentlemen Bastards' break the convention set up by the upper class by secretly stealing from the wealthy. Once they are discovered the fun and games really begin. What sets Lynch apart from those not on this list is his commentary on social class; a theme not really tackled effectively in the genre until now. Combine this with an extraordinary writing ability and you have another Guy Gavriel Kay writing about something worthwhile

George R.R. Martin[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Robert V. S. Redick[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Patrick Rothfuss[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Brandon Sanderson[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

  • Elantris (2005): Amazon (167 rec)
  • Warbreaker (2009), Amazon (185 rec)
Trama: Epic fantasy heavyweight Sanderson (the Mistborn series) pens a powerful stand-alone tale of unpredictable loyalties, dark intrigue and dangerous magic. To keep a treaty made long ago, the king of Idris must send his daughter to marry Susebron, the God King of Hallandren. Loath to part with his eldest daughter, Vivenna, King Dedelin instead sends his youngest daughter, tomboyish 17-year-old Siri, who struggles to make sense of the schemers and spies in Susebron's court. Hoping to rescue her sister, Vivenna joins a group of Idrian operatives with questionable motives. As Vivenna comes to terms with her magical abilities, resurrected hero Lightsong questions the role of the undead Returned Gods, who command Hallandren's mighty army of zombie soldiers. Sanderson melds complex, believable characters, a marvelous world and thoughtful, ironic humor into an extraordinary and highly entertaining story.

R. Scott Bakker[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Another Canadian, R Scott Bakker, is following closely in the footsteps of the previous authors. Whereas Martin has been around, Erikson and Bakker are writing their first series. Bakker's Prince of Nothing trilogy depict a world more similar to Martin's than Erikson's. Again, we have isolated characters from various domains forging their own battles within a group of empires jostling for position before a major campaign to retake territory in a 'religious' war. The story does follow a few key characters though: a sorceror and his prostitute lover caught up in the machinations of a holy war along with two mysterious heathens who hold the key to all events. Bakker, arguably one of the most intelligent writers in literature, constructs text-book prose with superb metaphores. Although his characterisation is good, and his philosophical dialogue is outstanding, Bakker doesn't match Erikson and Martin in building tension. He has begun the next trilogy that follows the events of this one.
