Anecdotes of the action are too numerous for all tofind a place here. But we may mention that on board thecaptured French ships the cartridges were found to bemostly made of the fine painted vellum on which churchmusic was painted, and of the titles and preuves denoblesse of the principal French families, many hundredyears old, and Illuminated, in many instances, with thegenealogical tree. There was a decree of the FrenchConvention, applying the archives of the nobility to thatparticular purpose. The great convoy of ships from theWest Indies and America, consisting of more than twohundred sail of ships, of immense value, and of so muchimportance to the French government that they riskedthe loss of their great Brest fleet for its safety, arrivedsafely in port a few days after the battle of the first ofJune.
