dto obviate any interference of Europe in behalf of the Chris-tian subjects of Turkey, following the example of SultanAbdul Hamid, they adopted measures—measures the mostcruel and diabolical—for the extermination of the Armenian-people. First, they drafted into the army all able-bodiedArmenian men; then they seized, imprisoned and secretlykilled the remaining men and boys; then they drove fromtheir homes the rest of the people, the young and the old, therich and the poor, the sick and the well, and started them onfoot from all points of Asia Minor on a journey of hundredsof miles, towards the deserts of Arabia, to die by the way fromhunger and thirst, from weariness and exposure, while thou-sands of women and girls were forced into a life of shameand slavery in Moslem tents and huts and houses.
