About this diagram
This diagram shows the current composition of the German Bundesrat.
  • Layout: it combines both the Representative-style ("horse-shoe" layout of the German Bundesrat and seating order) and Arch-style ("width" representing seats/votes) for election apportionment diagrams. The seats of each state are jointly representing each of the state goverment ("Länderregierung"). Single party (state) governments are nowadays the exception. A coalitions (coalizione politica (Q6138528)) state government is bound to vote en-block. Majority party in the colation on the outside and minority on the inside of the arch.
  • Elections: The composition might change at every change of any of the 16 state goverment appointment. The exact date of the change of composition is the date of any of Ministerpresident in one of the 16 states (re-)taking office (typically a couple of weeks after an state election).
  • Seats: Number of seats per state. Each state is allocated at least three votes, and a maximum of six. States with more than 2 million inhabitants have 4 votes, 6 million inhabitants have 5 votes, 7 million inhabitants have 6 votes.

    • keep the political composition up to date easily!

  • Active variants: this diagram in maintained in two variants. One with abbreviated state names to be used in small form, e.g. in info boxes, and a full diagram which takes up more space to be readable. Both should be kept up to date in parallel. Older and other variants are possibly maintained otherwise or not at all.

Change of power: The ruling parties/coalitions of all 16 German states change at least all five years. Thus the representation in the Bundesrat changes accordingly. To update this chart, you only need to change the symbolic references per each state to match the ruling party/coalition. It can be found right at the beginning of the SVG file. Should you need a new symbolic definition of a new coalition, please look further down in the SVG for the definition.
