Plantation

Pennsylvania. One of the original 13 states of the U.S.A. crossed by the Alleghenies, Pennsylvania is drained by the Ohio, Susquehanna and Delaware. Lumbering and agriculture are important, but Pennsylvania has a vast bituminous and anthracite coal output, and is the largest steel-producing state, Pittsburgh being the great centre for its manufacture. Other mineral products include petroleum and natural gas. Among agricultural products are cigar leaf tobacco, buckwheat, maize, wheat, potatoes, fruits. Pennsylvania was founded and named in 1682 by the Quaker William Penn who had been granted land by Charles II in 1681. The chief towns are Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Erie, Scranton, Alllentown and Harrisburg, the capital. The occurrence of mineral oil was known in ancient times, but the exploitation from oil-fields is a modern industry,[1] the first flowing oil-well having been operated in 1859 in Pennsylvania. The earliest oil-field to be exploited on a large scale were these of the U.S.A. The application of the seismic method to the search for petroleum began in the US Gulf Coast in 1924, when Orchard Salt Dome Field (Texas) was discovered.
