Ryoko Akama  (19 August 1976), known in the past under the name of Ryo Co. and Ryoko Kuwajima [1], is a Japanese sound artist/composer/performer, who approaches quiet temporal/spatial experiences that magnify silence, time and space. [2]

Ryoko grew up in Sendai, north-east of Honshu. [3] Between 1995 and 2004, she lived and worked in Europe graduating as Sound Engineering college there. Intrigued by sounds, she worked as a sound engineer at Mark Angelo recording studio for 2 years. This allowed her to have access to all the electronic devices and equipments that lead to start of her creating dance music. [4]

She returned home to Japan in 2005, taking up an apprenticeship with Nagauta (traditional Japanese music for Kabuki, Geisha). [5]

In 2015, she received PhD on composition supervised by Prof. Monty Adkins at Huddersfield University [6] where she was active as a part of Edges Ensemble lead by Prof. Philip Thomas.

Currently lives in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Her works employ small and fragile objects such as paper balloons and glass bottles, creating tiny occurrences that embody 'almost nothing' aesthetics [7]. She also composes text scores and performs a diversity of alternative scores in collaboration with international artists including Eliane Radigue, Tony Conrad, David Toop, Cristian Alvear and Taku Sugimoto.

Her works and projects have been funded by Arts Council England, Japan Society, Daiwa-Anglo Foundation, University of Huddersfield, Kirklees Council, Pro Helvetia and more. She is also active as a curator, runs melange edition label and co-edits reductive journal/mumei publishing. [8]

Ryoko's composition retains an analogue coyness where art and technology intersect: "I've stopped enjoying technology, but I really like old and vintage products aesthetically. When I work with old objects, there are things that can be done with them and I really enjoy the idea of that." [9]
