| If the VisualEditor does its job, we're going to have a lot more new contributors than we're used to, many interested in contributing productively. Even with a simpler editing interface, it will still take some time for them to adjust to the community and its norms. Luckily most projects have help forums or IRC channels where people can ask questions, and pages that steer users towards these forums and channels. Unluckily, as said, we're not used to having so many new contributors :).
Should you find yourself with free time, please do monitor the appropriate venues for your project. The existing helpers will undoubtedly appreciate any assistance you can offer. |
Se il VisualEditor funzionerà bene avremo molti più collaboratori di prima, avremo molte persone interessate a collaborre fattivamente. Tuttavia, anche con una interfaccia di editing semplificata, i nuovi collaboratori avranno necessità di un po' di tempo per adeguarsi alle regole che la cominità si è data. Per fortuna molti progetti hanno dei forum di aiuto o dei canali IRC dove le persone possono fare domande e molti rinvii verso questi forum e canali IRC. Per sfortuna, come detto, non siamo abituati ad avere così tanti collaboratori :-).
Se hai un po' di tempo libero, per favore tieni sotto controllo "the appropriate venus" (che roba è?) del tuo progetto. I volontari di Wikipedia apprezzeranno qualsiasi aiuto tu possa dare. |
| As part of our preparations for the launch we ran a group of users from UserTesting.com through a set of tasks, first using the VisualEditor and then using Wikimarkup. Some of them had tried to edit in the past; many were total newcomers. The script for the tests can be seen below. This is not the only data we are relying on; we are also (and more usefully) gathering quantitative data from a test on the English-language Wikipedia, in which 50 percent of new users were given the VisualEditor by default. We will post those results as soon as we have them.
Using the source editor "This automatically looks confusing and overwhelming." "There was tons of foreign jargon amidst the content and it looked nothing like how the real page looked." "I don't want to have to learn a new language just to edit Wikipedia." When presented with the source editor, users tended to have the same set of problems. Many of these centred around identifying what they were expected to change; with so much markup, they found it difficult to identify things in the markup view that matched what they'd seen when reading the rendered page. Users were also worried by the clutter of the editing interface, particularly the mass of buttons at the bottom of the "save page" window. Users struggled to understand the wikimarkup found in a moderately-sized article; when they managed to identify bits, it was almost entirely from comparing their memory of the rendered page to individual words, and looking at the formatting around those words (for example, noting that all of the headers had equals signs, and thus determining that equals signs made headers work). With one exception, every user found the source editor intimidating and would opt not to use it. |
Come fase preparatoria per i lancio di VisualEditor abbiamo testato con un gruppo di utenti di UserTestin.com alcune funzioni usando prima il VisualEditor e poi il Wikimarkup. Alcuni di loro avevano già scritto in Wikipedia in precedenza, mentre molti di loro era nuovi arrivi. Le risposte dei test possono essere visti qui sotto. Non stiamo lavorando solo su queste informazioni; stiamo anche (e con maggior efficacia) analizzando i dati di una sperimentazione fatta nella versione inglese di Wikipedia dove al 50 per cento dei nuovi utenti è stato attivato di default il VisualEditor. Pubblicheremo i risultati del test appena disponibili.
Usando il Wikimarkup: * "immediatamente pare confusionario e eccessivamente complesso" * "Ci sono un sacco di caratteri incomprensibili insieme al contenuto e non somiglia minimamente a come appare la vera pagina" * "Non voglio dover imparare un nuovo linguaggio solo per scrivere in Wikipedia". Quando gli utenti vedono il Wikimarkup tendono ad avere lo stesso tipo di problemi. Molti di questi derivano dalla difficoltà ad identificare ciò che volevano modificare; con così tanto markup trovano difficile identificare nella pagina ciò che avevano visto nella versione testuale (puo' andare?). Gli utenti erano inoltre disturbati dall'interfaccia dell'editor (o interfaccia di editazione ??), soprattutto per la quantità di opzioni presenti a fondo pagina dopo l'opzione "salva pagina". Gli utenti fanno fatica a comprendere il wikimarkup in una pagine di medie dimensioni; quando cercano di identificare i caratteri devono confrontare la loro memoria della pagina reale (non so come tradurre rendering) con le singole parole e individuare gli elementi di formattazione attorno ad esse (per esempio, accorgersi che le intestazioni hanno il simbolo di uguale e quindi capendo che tale simbolo serve a fare le intestazioni). Con una sola eccezione, tutti gli utenti trovano il l'editor sorgente troppo complesso (respingente ??) e non sceglierebbero di usarlo. |

"I've given up in the past because it seemed too confusing. With [the VisualEditor] it seemed like anyone can figure it out."
"[The VisualEditor] feels more like editing a word document and isn't as intimidating as the [source editor] which feels more like editing code" Several problems were raised with the VisualEditor. Many users found adding links to be confusing, something we have noted and are evaluating, and (as known) the VisualEditor was slow to load for some testers. Several other (now fixed) bugs, such as problems with saving the page, also frustrated users. However, all-but-one of the testers concluded that they preferred using the VisualEditor to using the source editor, one of them noting that "[with the VisualEditor] I would be more likely to make edits. That interface was a lot easier to understand and I had more confidence that the changes I was making were the changes that I wanted to make. I also like that I had an opportunity to review the changes and note them." |

Diversi problemi si sono presentati con il VisualEditor. Molti utenti hanno trovato l'inserimento di link un po' complesso, stiamo valutando la questione, inoltre (come noto) il VisualEditor per alcuni è lento nel caricamento. Molti altri errori (ora corretti), come alcune difficoltà nel salvare la pagina, hanno provocato frustrazione negli utenti. Tuttavia la maggioranza di loro alla fine ha preferito l'uso del VisualEditor al posto del WikiMarkup, uno di loro ha annotato "usando il [[VisualEditor]] è più facile fare correzioni (per make editing, va bene?). Questa interfaccia è molto più semplice da usare e così sono sicuro che le correzioni che sto facendo sono quelle che voglio fare. Mi piace poter rivedere le modifiche fatte e annotare i cambiamenti fatti. |
