Giampaolo Cagnin

[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Giampaolo Cagnin[1] (born 19 March 1960 in Parma, Italy) is an Italian entrepreneur, food ingredients expert and pioneer in the production and sale of clean label natural vegetable ingredients. He is also an angel investor and passionate art collector.

Career and previous companies

[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Giampaolo has dedicated his whole professional life to studying, developing, producing and selling natural food ingredients. He began in 1983, and after six years of training and experience in the field he founded “Italiana Ingredienti” (listed 10 years later as "one of the most profitable Italian small businesses; source Il Sole 24 Ore") Italiana Ingredienti was acquired in December 1999 by multinational group Chr Hansen, Copenhagen, where Giampaolo worked for 5 years, consolidating his international expertise, both as country manager and worldwide developer of tasty clever solutions. After the take-over by Chr Hansen, Giampaolo created and brought to success the company "Campus",[2] well known Italian leader in natural ingredients for meat and meat alternatives. Founded in 2005, with manufacturing plants in Italy and Mexico and with skilled distributors all over Europe, Campus was acquired by Swiss giant Firmenich[3] in August 2018.[4][5][6][7]

After the sale of Campus, Giampaolo operated through his holding Synergetic,[8] closing various investments in private equity and venture capital (see ; 3 - Synergetic) and has added greatly to his art collection, now located in Parma in a dedicated building which at present houses around 500 pieces from Old Masters to Futurism and Abstract art and Italian Sculptures. Since 2020 Giampaolo has been working on his life’s most ambitious project: Hi-Food.[9]

Hi-Food[9] began as a special and unconventional project in Giampaolo’s career. It was created in 2012 within the University of Parma[10] and was funded through meaningful investments with a prophetic mission; to develop new vegan, clean label and allergen free ingredients for the food industry to come. Hi-Food[9] has therefore researched, developed and sometimes patented, new generations of all-vegetable innovative food ingredients. A new natural bulking agent to replace sugar (Meltec®[11]), an outstanding soluble fibre from flaxseeds with impressive native functionalities,[12] new fermentates with antimicrobial properties,[13] Italian grown corn fibres,[14] new nucleus to mimic gluten behaviour,[15] new fat and egg substitutes[16] and the latest technological evolutions in twin-screw dry extrusion for the manufacturing of improved textured vegetable proteins with better taste, structure, bite, colour, greasiness. The range, quantity and quality of the innovations produced by the Hi-Food R&D Team (12 people, led by Dr. Emanuele Pizzigalli[17]) and managed by CEO Dr. Massimo Ambanelli[18]) has convinced Giampaolo to return to the field and to invest big in what it will become the most promising, high-tech, flexible, and effective vegan ingredient factory in Italy and probably in Europe. The new 8000 sqm Hi-Food[19] facilities in Parma (in central-northern Italy) will be operational from December 2021, while the industrial extrusion lines will go operational for the first time in June 2022. An impressive centre of development and application with 8 different pilot plants will be available for colleagues, researchers, start-ups and customers from all over the world. In the integrated Hi-Food[9] new production lines, vegetable raw materials will be upcycled, fractionated, micronized, co-processed and extruded in an almost perfect circle of synergic manufacturing, with endless potential, to produce new functional ingredients with no animal, chemical or genetic intervention. After 38 years experience, the Hi-Food[9] team is at the very heart of the food r-evolution, with the right technologies and ingredients for building a better future.

Synergetic[20] is the controlling holding company of Hi-Food[19] with an 80.94% stake, but it is also Giampaolo’s investment vehicle. The dedicated website[20] contains the specific participation in nutraceutical, food and health companies. At present Synergetic[20] is extremely interested in investing in food ingredients companies in order to bring value and build synergies through the new Hi-Food[19] production and development facilities.

Other Interests

[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Giampaolo is a passionate and insatiable art collector,[21] a passion inherited from his father Pietro Cagnin.[22] The headquarters of his personal holding – Synergetic[20] houses his growing art collection, and is located in the centre of a big green park: the ideal place to meet, be creative and think outside the box.

Giampaolo is also one of the few shareholders of the famous Italian auction house Finarte,[23] located both in Milan and Rome. The best Italian art publisher - Franco Maria Ricci[24] - has just dedicated an important book to Giampaolo’s collection of Italian sculptures.[25]
