The historic cemetery of Brugherio is located in Viale Lombardia, between Via Cajani and Via Virgilio. It was originally deployed in the block between Viale Lombardia, Via Vittorio Veneto and Via Galvani.

History[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

The cemetery was built in Brugherio in 1787 and, as required by the law, it was placed outside the town. It stood above a plot of Gaspare Garland, one of the largest landowners of the time. In 1894, having extended the village, it was moved further north, along Viale Lombardia. In the eighteenth century in the cadastral maps it is also remembered another space probably used as a cemetery called "prato del Larrazetto" which was located between the streets Saint Maurice and Saint Christopher and was used as a burial ground for plague victims. During the "plague of Saint Charles" in 1576 it had to open a mass grave to bury the large number of people died as a result of the epidemic twice.[1]

Arts[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

The area devoted to exhumations, with brick and iron fence finely worked, was used until the end of the sixties. Inside there are the chapel for the celebration of Mass and the tombstones that recall the burial of historical priests and pastors of Brugherio, as Don Gian Andrea Nova. Not missing several monumental tombs of stone and marble, used to house the remains of historical figures, such as those containing the remains of Dr. Paul Veladini, his wife, his brother Michael, their children and grandchildren.
