st of Februarysome of the trees were putting forth theirfoliage ; in March the red bud, the hawthornand the dog-wood, in full bloom, checkeredthe hills, displaying their beautiful colors ofrose and lily; and in April the ground wascovered with May apple, bloodroot, ginseng,violets, and a great variety of herbs andflowers. Flocks of parroquets were seen,decked in their rich plumage 6f green andgold. Birds of various species, and of everyhue, were flitting from tree to tree, and thebeautiful redbird, and the untaught songsterof the west, made the woods vocal with theirmelody. Now might be heard the plaintivewail of the dove, and the rumbling drum ofthe partridge, or the loud gobble of theturkey. Here might be seen the clumsybear, doggedly moving off, or urged by pur-suit into a laboring gallop, retreating to hiscitadel in the top of some lofty tree; or, ap-proached suddenly, raising himself erect inthe attitude of defence, facing his enemy andwaiting his approach ; there the timid deer,
