Chaplin died on March 20, 1968, in Santa Monica, California, of a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs), just 46 days before his 43rd birthday. At the time of his untimely death, his famed father was living in Switzerland and did not attend his son's funeral, at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. He rests in the Abbey of the Psalms mausoleum of Hollywood Forever Cemetery, with his maternal grandmother Lillian Grey (1888–1985). His paternal grandmother Hannah Hill Chaplin (1865–1928) rests in the same cemetery, but buried in the lake-lined old Sect. 8 (now Garden of Legends) area on the east end.
