English: A cast copper alloy button and loop fastener. A triangular-shaped shank projects from the back with slight damage to one of the corners. The head is formed by a number of beads: there are three larger beads in a rectangular formation with a smaller bead in the centre and a hump running directly from the base of the shank. The beads are hollow at the back and form a cup-like appearance with evidence of a rivet running in the centre of the beads to possibly hold the highest bead in place.
The overall length of the fastener is 44mm, with a width of 25mm across the head.
The toggle is in good condition with an a smooth and dark green/ brown patina. There are small traces of bronze disease, particularly on the shank.
No exact parallels have been found on other toggles to shown this type of decoration, but the bead formation can be seen on pin heads (Fig 59, page 193-4, Kilbride-Jones) of the same date. This style of toggle can be dated by using parallels from excavations at Danebury to the 1st/ early 2nd century AD (Cunliffe, 1984).
