Moussorgskys masterly opera has madeone of the greatest successes in the history ofthe Metropolitan, and it is astonishing that sofine a work should have been neglected fornearly forty years—for Boris was produced in1874—and the Western musical world, as onecritic has aptly remarked, must have beendozing. However, the Metropolitan has madeamends somewhat by giving a magnificent pres-entation of Moussorgskys opera, with a castthat could not be equaled anywhere in theworld. The duet presented here occurs in the scenerepresenting the garden of the castle of Michekin Poland. Marina, the beautiful daughter ofMichek, spurred on by both love and ambition,urges Dimitri to conspire against the throne.
