South of Tulum, there's little site called Muyil with very few visitors. It is not big, but there are a few interesting buildings with historical significance.

Muyil and Chunyaxche, the modern names used to refer to this archaeological site, derived from two lagoons located on the area's outskirts. Muyil, the most notable of the 22 pre-Hispanic settlements of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is 12 kilometres from the Caribbean Sea.

It was a densely populated settlement during the pre-Hispanic era, as can be evidenced by the greet quantity of civic, religious and residential constructions found.

Information obtained up to now indicates that Mayan groups began to

populate the site at around 300 B.C., and probably remained until the first decade of the 16th entry, when Francisco de Montero led the Spanish conquest of Yucatan.
