In a Piazza at the E. side ofSiena stands the Gothic Churchof S. Francesco, lately restored.Around the spacious nave aretombs and reliefs, and on the walla fresco by Amb. Lorenzetti. Overthe altar in a closed chapel is aVirgin and Child by the samepainter, and on the left wall aVirgin and Child with SS. Francis,John the Baptist, Catharine ofAlexandria, and Peter Martyr, byBarna. The handsome cloistersare now the property of the Govern-ment. Adjacent is the Oratorio di S.Bernardino, containing celebratedfrescoes, principally by Sodoma(50 c). In the lower chapel,Virgin and Child with SS. Bar-tholomew and Ansano, by Bres-cianino. GUIDE TO ITALY Sora 299 panelled, in bine and gold, and thefrieze is an admirable work byGiuliano Turapilli (1500). In theSacristy is a banner with theVirgin and six putti, by Sodoma. The Piazza cli S. Francesco over-looks the Porta Ovile, across avalley to the N. Below the gate-way is a picturesque Fountain,worth visiting. From the gate aroad leads through a suburb in40 min. easy walking to the Fran-ciscan Convent of the Osservanza,conspicuous on a hill beyond therailway. After crossing the line,the pedestrian may follow a foot-path to the left. The Church has terra-cottaornaments in relief, of a goodEenaissance period. At the 2ndaltar on the left is a beautifulaltarpiece in glazed white byAndrea delta Robbia, representingthe Coronation of the Virgin, withSS. Jerome, Bernardino, Catharineof Alexandria, Francis, andCatharine of Siena (kneeling).Below is a predella, with theAnnunciation, Nativity, and As-sumption.
