A RESTORATION OF BALUCHITHF.RIU.M, a gigantic fossil rhinoceros 34 feet in length whose general appearance suggests an os-trich, but with a long tail. On account of thisresemblance it is known as Struthiomimus.This bird-like appearance, however, is purelysuperficial as it is not at all related to theostrich. Nevertheless, primitive birds origi-nated from light-boned pre-dinosaurs of afar earlier epoch (Triassic). Some examplesof fossil birds are shown in the farther right-hand corner of the hall, including the giantlong-legged Diatryma with its powerfulbeak, and the ancient swimming water bird,Hesperornis. In a neighboring case are castsof the famous Archaopteryx. This creaturewas actually transitional between reptiles andbirds, having the skeletal characteristics,clawed fore-limb, and tapering tail of theformer and the beak-shaped jaws andfeathered covering of the latter.
