Another day we rode out to see the ruin called Akar-Kuf, which lies about ten miles to the north-west ofBaghdad. The mass of brickwork, which is probably thecore of a ziggurat or step-pyramid, is about 120 feet highand 100 feet wide, and the circumference at the base isbetween 270 and 280 feet; it stands on a low mound,which is probably the remains of the base or first step ofthe edifice. The Ziggiirat of Akar-Iytf. 327 of brickwork formed part of a large group of buildings.The bricks in the lowest part were about i foot squareand 3 inches thick, whilst those in the upper partseemed to be nearly 2 feet in length. Between everyfive or six layers of bricks was a layer of reeds, abouti^ inches thick. Akar-Kuf is now thought to markthe site of a town built by the Kassite King Kurigalzuin the thirteenth century B.C., and called Dur Kuri-galzu. The ruin has been often measured anddescribed,^ but its actual history can only be obtainedby systematic excavation. A common native name forit is Tall Nimrud, or the Hill of Nimrod, which hascaused many travellers to confuse it with Birs-i-Nimrud,and so with the Tower of Babel; but the mistake isobvious when we remember that the Tower of Babelstood near the Euphrates, while Akar-Kuf is no greatdistance from the Tigris.
