Rom und die "Dunklen Jahrhunderte": die Geschichte der Bibliotheken im Zeitraum von 300 v. Chr. bis ca. 1900 n. Chr.

Die vertikale Anordnung bescheibt den Bestand (k = mit 1000 zu multiplizieren). Vier antike Rollen werden einem neuzeitlichen Buch gleichgesetzt, das mit einem Informationsgehalt von 333 kByte normiert ist. (der tatsächliche Bestand der Rollen in der Antike war also um ein vierfaches höher als hier dargestellt). Die vertikale Skalierung ist jeweils zum Faktor 10 hin zunehmend gestaucht. Spätestens ab 1900 ist die Höhe des Bestandes nicht mehr darstellbar. Man beachte bitte, dass die mit "Name of the Rose" benannte Bibliothek fiktiv ist (siehe Der Name der Rose) und zur Veranschaulichung dienen soll.

Quellen sind Hauptsächlich die Schriften von Leyh^[1][2]. Für die Belegung der Wandnischen wurde ein Wert zwischen dem von Casson^[3] und Hoepfner^[4] verwendet. Er basiert mehr auf den Oxyrhynchos-Daten von Johnson^[5].

Annahmen:

• Gemauerte Nische = 100%
• Holzrahmen, Luftspalt und Regalboeden: -10%
• Zwischenräume bei dichtester Packung: -10%
  (Aus geometrischen Gründen bis zu π·r²/4·r²/cos(30ø) = 90.7% und somit 80 Prozent der Mauer-Wandnische als Rollenfläche. Dies wäre dann ein zu 100 Prozent gefüllter Armar. Angegeben wurden Werte für einen etwa zu 90 Prozent gefüllten Armar. )

Begleitnotiz zur Umrechnung Rolle/Codex/Buch:

The conversion factor 4 from scroll to book was derived by the mean number of letters per scroll (83300, see Graphik from Oxyr. Scrolls) and the mean number of letters per codice of CLA in 700-800 AD. The later was derived by counting the letters on the repro pages in the CLA and multiplyng with the number of pages the original codex had according the CLA, The Bible was excluded and the number of 4 reached with less than 10% mean error.
Four times 83300 letters gives 333000 and that could be called an information content of 333 kByte per book. To equal one letter with one Byte (8 Bit) can be challenged. But the size, style, color and layout information of a letter codex could justify the letter per Byte aproximation. If one counts in graphics and single letter paintings, then the 333 kB would be under the assumption of a jpeg like compression algorithm applied. Counting full page book paintings the 333 kB would by rather under the assumption of a high performance wavelet compression. Modern books are probably somewhat larger in letter count and information content (photographs) than MA codices or the books in print of 1800. But then the diagramms ends at 1 Million books per library in the early 1900s anyway.
