Wolfgang Smith

Wolfgang Smith (18 febbraio 1930) è un matematico e fisico statunitense.

Smith è cattolico e aderisce alla Scuola tradizionalista. Ha scritto molto nel campo della geometria differenziale ed è un fautore di una nuova interpretazione della meccanica quantistica che attinge a piene mani da dell'ontologia e dal realismo medievali. Smith si è distinto come critico dello scientismo e del riduzionismo.

Smith si è laureato nel 1948 presso la Cornell University dove ha conseguito un B.A. in Filosofia, Fisica e Matematica. Due anni dopo ha conseguito un M.S. in Fisica presso la Purdue University e un dottorato in Matematica presso la Columbia University. Ha lavorato come fisico presso la Bell Aircraft Corporation, dove ha svolto ricerche nel campo dell'aerodinamica. Smith è stato professore di matematica al MIT, alla UCLA e alla Oregon State University[1], e ha dedicato la sua attività di ricerca al campo della geometria differenziale. Ha pubblicato articoli in riviste accademiche come Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, American Journal of Mathematics, e altri. Si è ritirato dalla vita accademica nel 1992. Parallelamente ai suoi obblighi accademici, Smith ha sviluppato e sviluppa tutt'oggi la ricerca filosofica nel campo della metafisica e della filosofia della scienza, pubblicando articoli su riviste come The Thomist and Sophia: The Journal of Traditional Studies.[2][3][4]

Smith è un sostenitore del perennialismo filosofico e ha contribuito in modo significativo alla critica della modernità e all'analisi dei fondamenti filosofici del metodo scientifico, sostenendo la necessità di far tornare la scienza nel quadro del tradizionale realismo aristotelico. Smith è Fellow del Center for Science and Culture del Discovery Institute[5] e sostiene la teoria matematica del disegno di William Dembski, che considera "una delle più importanti scoperte scientifiche del nostro tempo".[6]
