Actually, I like italian films by such filmmakers as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Michelangelo Antonioni and Roberto Rossellini a lot :-) And I visited Italy twice: once on the way to another country, and once on a vacation at the Lago di Garda visiting also Cremona, Verona and Venice. I did enjoy both visits VERY much!
